"Heads up

"Heads up. We've got a visitor coming." Donald's sudden announcement came completely out of nowhere, cutting through the room while everyone was busy with their own work. I had been walking over with my tablet in hand, helping my student with a question he'd asked me, when Donald's words made me pause. "Another time." I told my student with an apologetic smile, giving him a reassuring pat on the back before making my way toward my siblings. The sudden tension in the room was hard to miss. "Is it a government agent, coming to take us away?" Adam asked, his voice laced with worry as his mind immediately jumped to the worst possible conclusion. Chase quickly raised both arms, his expression skeptical. "Our secret's been out for a year. Why would they take us away now?" I nodded along with Chase's reasoning.

Adam looked down thoughtfully, clearly still turning the possibilities over in his head. "Let's just say, I've done some things." We decided to let it slide for now as he climbed the steps, his student walking away from the conversation and leaving us to focus on our dad. "It's my chief scientist, Dr. Ryan. He is by far the smartest man I have ever worked with." He explained this while waving his arms animatedly, stepping in front of us with Chase following closely behind him.

"Huh! Ahem!" Chase scoffed loudly, deliberately clearing his throat at our father's words. I groaned at the obvious attempt to draw attention to himself, dropping my head onto Bree's shoulder. She let out an amused chuckle beside me, clearly entertained by Chase's reaction.

"Oh, you're right. I'm sorry." my dad turned around, placing a hand on Chase's shoulder as he faced us again. Chase's smug smile immediately fell when Dad pointed proudly to himself. "I am the smartest man I have ever worked with." he corrected, chuckling to himself.

I finally lifted my head from my sister's shoulder, trying not to laugh as my dad wandered farther toward the hydraloop. We followed behind him like a line of ducklings, curious to hear more about this mysterious visitor. "Dr. Ryan was head of his class at MIT. And he's been Davenport Industries' Employee of the Month twice! That's never happened." He paused dramatically, raising a finger. "Well... except, of course, for me." Leo blinked, clearly trying to process what he'd just heard. "You named yourself Employee of the Month at your own company?" He simply nodded, completely unashamed while Leo narrowed his eyes at him, his expression slowly shifting into disbelief. "I think you love yourself a little too much."

"Been established." I coughed into my fists, wearing the most innocent smile I could manage. I already knew he was going to give me that look. "It's not because I love myself." he said slowly, pausing for dramatic effect. "It's because I'm better than everyone else." He gave an exaggerated bow as if that settled the argument once and for all. Before anyone could respond, the hydraloop suddenly opened with a mechanical hiss. A man stepped out, and my attention immediately shifted toward him.

For a chief scientist, I had expected him to show up in something more formal—maybe a lab coat, dress shirt, or at the very least something that suggested he worked for one of the most advanced companies in the world. Instead, he looked like he was heading straight for a vacation. "Hey, hey! Wassup, dudes?" He greeted Dad with an enthusiastic high five before his eyes landed on Bree and I. He gave us a slight bow, grinning. "Lady dudettes." Bree blinked at him before gesturing toward him with an uncertain laugh. "This is your esteemed chief scientist?"
