"Hey guys, good morning." I yawned, waving at them with slow, sleepy fingers like I was still half-asleep and only partially present in reality. My voice came out soft and dragged, like it had to stretch itself awake before I did. I blinked a few times, squinting at everyone. I'm sorry if I made you guys yawn too.
Chase looked up immediately, already alert in that annoyingly efficient way he always was. "Good morning? You do realise it's three in the afternoon." He lifted his wrist and checked his watch like it personally offended him that I didn't know what time it was. His eyebrows pulled together slightly as he stared at me. I just shrugged, completely unfazed, letting my shoulders fall lazily. "Well done. You know time." Chase tilted his head, and narrowed his eyes. I scoffed lightly, brushing it off.
"That just means double the breakfast." I said brightly, already turning toward the kitchen like it was the most logical conclusion in the world but as I stepped forward, Leo moved quickly to block me. "Hey, Dawn?"
"Whaaaat?" I whined, dragging the word out dramatically, my stomach already voting against anything that wasn't food. I leaned slightly to the side, trying to peek around him toward the kitchen like it might disappear if I didn't act fast. "Do you wanna hang out, seeing as our lovely family is sick of me?"
I paused immediately. My expression softened. "Aww, Leo." I smiled, genuinely touched for a second. Leo smiled back, hopeful, already thinking he had won this interaction. Then I shook my head. "No, thank you."
His smile dropped so fast it was almost impressive. My curiosity, however, didn't stay quiet for long. Something in Adam's hand caught my eye—something rough, uneven, oddly large. I stopped mid-step, head tilting. "Ohh." I said suddenly, interest snapping into place like a switch had been flipped. "But I do wanna know why Adam's got a giant rock in his hand." I stepped past Leo without even thinking, my attention fully locked onto Adam now. He stood there proudly, holding it like it was treasure he'd personally rescued from history. "Yeah." Adam said, lifting it slightly. "I found it on the shore. I had to dig it out from under a wooden box of old yellow coins and jewelry."
He licked his lips, still clutching it close to his chest like it might run away if he blinked too hard. I leaned in closer, eyes narrowing as I examined it. My curiosity sharpened into focus—slowly, carefully, I studied the surface. I suddenly shifted back a step, instinctively slipping behind Leo like he had become accidental protection. "Adam." Chase said, voice changing slightly. "This isn't a rock. It's a fossil. Let me see that thing."
There was a beat of silence as that information landed. Okay. That was actually interesting. So my earlier hunger crisis? Delayed.
"No!" Adam snapped immediately, pulling it back. They both started tugging at it, a messy back-and-forth struggle breaking out over what was apparently now a very important prehistoric object.
