We stepped cautiously into the facility, the echo of our footsteps bouncing off the metallic walls. In typical Leo fashion, he decided to announce our arrival at full volume. "Hello?" he called out, his voice ringing through the empty space. The door behind us slammed shut with a metallic clang, making us all jump. It locked automatically, sealing us inside. As we continued forward, the mood shifted. We must have looked like amateur investigators.
"Whoa!" Leo whispered, his eyes wide as he took in the sleek, high-tech environment. "My new dad is Batman."
"Shhh!" I hissed, yanking him behind a stack of large yellow barrels as I heard commotion coming from the other side of the room.
The faint sound of another door opening caught our attention. Deciding to huddle closer together, two boys entered the room, one slamming the heavy steel door shut behind them. "Good luck getting in. That steel door is thicker than your head." The boy taunted. To our astonishment, the young man punched the door, breaking it effortlessly with the steel bent inward with a deafening crash. How could he be so strong? "Well, that was a way to get in." he remarked and grabbed the other boy by the front of his shirt and lifted him effortlessly off the ground. "Give me back my e-pod!" he demanded but the boy protested, squirming helplessly. "I don't have it!"
Just then, a girl strolled into the room, oblivious to the scene unfolding in front of her. She had earbuds in, the faint sound of music playing. "You took my e-pod!" he accused, pointing an accusing finger at her.
The girl pulled out one earbud, raising an unimpressed eyebrow. "Taylor Swift megamix? Really?" "I find her soothing!" the boy retorted defensively, yanking the e-pod out of her hand. The girl rolled her eyes and turned to leave, but before she could take a step, the boy shot lasers out of his eyes, aiming directly at her. LASERS TOO? What don't they have?
"Oh, I knew you wouldn't shoot those lasers at me." she sassed at him, turning back to look at him. "Sorry. It was a terrible mistake..." He paused, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "...just like your face." The girl narrowed her eyes, then moved so fast she was practically a blur. Before he could react, she rammed into him, sending him crashing into the yellow barrels— our hiding spot.
In our scramble to get away, Leo and I ended up clinging to each other, wide-eyed and trembling. Realizing how ridiculous we looked, we quickly let go and exchanged sheepish glances.
"Never speak of this again?" I whispered. "Agreed." Leo replied, nodding fervently. Without another word, he bolted, his shriek echoing through the lab as he fled like a terrified child. If the situation hadn't been so dire, I might have laughed. Instead, I swallowed my nerves and ran after him. I mean, he did leave me alone with them. Not to mention, they were staring at me, bewildered, as if they had never seen a human before...
...
"Okay, I don't play this card often, but MUM!" Leo shouted. There was no need to yell; they were just humans with superpowers. What's the worst that could happen?
Davenport and Tasha soon descended to join us, and we quickly ran over to her as she surveyed the room. "What is this place? Who are they?" Davenport looked nervous, stammering. "They? Uh, they're a boy band I've been working with, and the twist is one of them is a girl." Even I, his daughter, was perplexed by these strangers. We gave him a skeptical look until he finally caved.
"Alright, they're part of a secret project I've been developing: genetically engineered superhuman siblings. Dawn, Tasha, Leo, meet Adam, Bree, and Chase, the most advanced combination of bionics and technology ever developed. And not to brag, but I am incredibly smart."
