We had just returned from a successful mission, still in our suits as we stepped out of the Hydraloop, the adrenaline barely fading. Chase exited first, followed by Adam lugging the mission bags. Bree and I came out next, each carrying our own, with Leo trailing behind, slinging his over his shoulder. "Nice work, guys. That mission was a total success." Chase called out as we scattered to drop our bags. Adam voiced his thoughts as he plopped his bag down as Leo stepped beside him. "Maybe for you. Nothing caught fire or exploded. For me? Colossal failure."
"Well, good news—you've got heat vision and an entire afternoon. Go make something happen." That was exactly what Adam wanted to hear as he held out his fist for a fist bump. When Leo walked away, Adam turned toward Bob, who was calling out to him. Meanwhile, I leaned back against the wall, letting myself relax. "Hey, Adam, check it out. While you were gone, I got to boogie board with the dolphins." Bob beamed as he held up a battered yellow boogie board—one with jagged bite marks that were definitely not from dolphins. More like a shark, but I wasn't about to crush his spirit. Adam took the board, gave it a once-over, and laughed. "Bob, those weren't dolphins. These are clearly the bite marks of an angry catfish."
Bob crossed his arms, a wide grin spreading across his face, clearly impressed. He uncrossed them just to take the board back. "Wow! Is there anything you don't know?" He gave Adam a proud nod before turning to to walk away. "I don't think we should let those two play together anymore." Bree muttered next to me, raising an eyebrow. I just shrugged, smirking. "They're kinda cute together."
We headed over to the console where Chase was already seated, focused on whatever tech readout was in front of him. Just then, Sebastian approached, looking hopeful. "Hey, Chase, on the next mission, do you think I might actually be able to, you know... do something?"
"Well, you did get to do something." Chase replied, glancing up with a smug grin. "You watched me be an amazing mission leader. Most people would pay to see that." He gave Sebastian a light punch on the arm, clearly amused with himself. "And then demand a refund." Bree added dryly, hands on her hips, one brow raised. I chuckled, fist-bumping her with a grin. "Burn."
Sebastian sighed, clearly not amused. "I'm just saying, the whole purpose for me going on the mission was to get some hands-on training."
"And you did." Chase said cheerfully, completely missing the point. "You handed me my flashlight and my lip balm. Thank you." He turned back to the console like the discussion was over. Sebastian's frown deepened as he pushed his point again, not backing down. "But I'm the best student here! I've been acing all of my training exercises. Without practice how am I ever gonna be mission leader?" He argued, bringing up some valid points. "Oh, see—that's just it." Chase stood up straight, his expression smug as he jabbed a thumb toward himself. "You won't. Because I'm the mission leader."
"Yeah, dude, you can't be mission leader, too." Adam jumped in, stepping between Chase and Sebastian like a human wall. He threw an arm around each of them, gently pushing them apart. "Because then I would have to make fun of both of you, and there just aren't enough hours in the day." Chase shrugged, folding his arms across his chest with a faint smirk as his brother continued. "I need some me-time."
