Roxy pov
I saw my boss signal for me to come over. I swallowed hard, scared for what's going to come of this, and walked over. They walked into my office and sat on the side of the desk that I would normally sit. I sat in the chair facing them and waited for someone to say something. The silence was deafening.
"Miss Hawthorne, a pleasure to meet with you again." My boss said. He called Miss, this isn't going well.
"You too." I smiled as best as I could.
"Let's just get right to it shall we?" The official asked as I nodded.
"Miss Hawthorne, we've been going over some of your old cases and patients, don't worry, it's just routine. But we found a file that has spiked concern. Do you remember that of an Erin Stevens?" He asked as he read the name off of the report.
"Jaden's old partner? As in Leela Hossler's mother?" I asked, making sure we had the right person.
"That's the one. You delivered her baby correct?" My boss asked.
"Yes I did."
"Well in her autopsy report, it showed she died of an overdose, but in the report you wrote says she died of infection. Care to explain?" The official asked as she crossed her knee over her other and placed her hands on top.
"She did die of an infection. Her toxicology results showed that she had drugs in her system that she had taken the night before. We gave her a limited dose of the anaesthesia, almost an eighth of a normal dose. What we didn't realise was just how weak her immune system was from the heroin she injected into herself. It is correct that she did overdose, but we stabilised her and stopped it. She did die from infection in the early hours of the morning after, a few hours after her giving birth." I lied.
"Right, but you failed to mention in her report that she was overdosed, correct?" Fuck. There's no way around it.
"Yes sir, I was concerned for the health of the baby and it must have just slipped my mind at the time." I lied again.
I know lying is wrong, but it reduces my chances of being suspended. And going to prison.
"Right okay. You see Roxy, you're a good nurse. And we'd hate to lose you. And so fortunately because you explained what happened with an answer that aligns with the report you gave, you will only be suspended. We would much rather not do anything about it because you are the beating heart of this hospital, but we risk everything is this was ever to get out. I hope you understand." The official explained and I nodded.
"How long will I be suspended for?"
"Well, we wanted to give you the minimum suspension which would be sixth months, but for fear of others possibly finding out about this, we decided that a year and a half's suspension would be suitable. Everything will be here when you come back, and all of your progress will be frozen and can be picked back up upon your return. We do hope that you understand why we are doing this. You will still receive your pay, we will not leave you out of money, however your wages will be a quarter less than what you normally receive." She finished explaining and stood up.
Both her and my boss opened the door and waited for me to leave. I got up and quickly walked out to the changing rooms. I quickly changed back into the clothes I came in and left the hospital.
Under the terms of my suspension, I am now no longer allowed inside the hospital for work purposes. I am only allowed in under the condition I am visiting a patient or am the patient myself.
I got in my car and quickly sped off back to Jaden's house. I was internally hoping that he had gone out with Leela or something so that I wouldn't have to talk to him when I got in, knowing I was going to breakdown over this.
I groaned as I saw his Audi still parked in its space. I got out of my car and walked up the driveway. I got in the house and was relieved when I saw Leela curled up asleep on the couch. My nerves didn't completely ease when I realised that meant that Jaden was still around. I tried as hard as I could not to make any noise. But apparently he knew I was here.
"Hey, you're back." He smiled as he turned the corner from the kitchen.
"Yeah, hi." I smiled as I headed straight for the stairs.
"Roxy?" He questioned as I went all the way up, and not turning around.
I didn't hear him following me, so I knew I was safe for a bit. I walked into my room and shut the door. I dropped my bag on the floor and my tag fell out. I picked it up and read over the information.
"Fuck." I screamed as I threw it at the wall in sheer anger.
I fell back against the wall and brought my knees to my chest. I started sobbing and crying uncontrollably as I watched the plastic shards shatter. I heard footsteps making their way up the stairs quickly, knowing my outburst had alerted Jaden.
He opened the door and sat down next to me. I wasn't crying at this point. I still had tears streaming down my face, but my expression was cold and stiff. He pulled me into his embrace and I rested my head against his shoulder.
"What the fuck happened?" He asked in a soft tone.
"Erin happened." His body tensed at the mention of her name.
"Erin as in my ex, Erin?" I nodded against his shoulder. "Baby, she's dead."
"I know that. That's the exact fucking reason I've been suspended for the next year and a half." I laughed bitterly at his words.
"What do you mean?" He asked, still confused.
"She overdosed. Because of the heroine she took the night before Leela's birth, it weakened her immune system and she overdosed on the anaesthesia. Her autopsy showed her cause of death was an overdose. It wasn't it was the infection caused from the needle. We managed to stabilise her after the overdose, but I was more concerned about making sure Leela was healthy after she was born, that I didn't write in her report she had overdosed. Apparently the other nurses were too busy doing absolutely nothing to write it down either and now I've been suspended as I was the head doctor." I sighed as I threw my head back, it hitting the wall with a bit of force.
"Don't do that." He said as he put his hand behind my head to stop me from hitting it again. "I'm sorry that happened. But why is that just coming up now? Surely this should have happened when the report was given in and the autopsy didn't match up." He questioned.
"Nope. It can happen at any point. A routine in the hospital is to check old files to make sure that everything is in line. They chose five or six at random, and just my fucking luck Erin's was one of the multiple thousands of files they could've picked. Under the terms of suspension unless I am visiting a patient or am the patient, I can't step a foot in the hospital or I lose my job." I sighed as I stood up.
"I'm sorry." He said to me sympathetically.
"Don't be. It was my mistake." I shrugged.
