It was Cassandra's idea that all of you race through the forest and back to Castle Dimitrescu. Lady Dimitrescu had just departed from one of the meetings among Mother Miranda and the three lords. Alcina, engrossed with her wine business and political matters, hadn't spent as much time as she would've liked with her daughters. Aside from eating dinner with them in the evenings and visiting with each daughter for some much-needed quality time, Bela mentioned they didn't see their mother all that often. However, since your arrival, they saw her around more frequently, and that made them exceedingly happy. Alcina Dimitrescu would occasionally forget that gifting them with only herself was what they treasured most.
As Alcina shut the door behind her and joined all of you outside of one of the lord's strongholds, Cassandra skipped over to her. "Mother! I have a brilliant idea! Why don't we take the circuitous route back to the castle? Can we? Please?"
"And why do you wish to take the longer route, my dear?" Alcina asked.
Daniela spoke up, "Because we want to race back to the castle! We all know you love competition, Mother." Pausing from her thoughts, Daniela lit up like a firefly. "Actually, it would be even more fun if someone chased us." Her sisters vigorously nodded in agreement.
"Oh, hell no," you mumbled to yourself. There was no way that you were going to volunteer to be the chaser among these mutant humans. They were remarkably stronger, faster, and physically outstanding compared to you. Moreover, there was no doubt in your mind that the girls would probably cheat anyway. You remained silent.
Lady Dimitrescu watched her daughters' glee and pondered their request. Having left the family meeting, she was exhausted and wished to return home promptly, envisioning herself sinking into a tub of warm water after a tedious day. However, she could not deny her daughters' desire to have fun, and they were right, she did indeed enjoy competition. Glancing at you, a sudden plan came to her mind as her lips curved into an impish grin. You were too occupied to notice as you stared down at your feet, attempting to appear less visible. "All right, let's play a game."
The girls cheered and twirled around. Before they could say anything, Alcina added, "There are rules, though. There shall be two pursuers. I will be one of them, and Daniela shall be the other. The rest of you will have an exact hour to reach home. Once you're beyond the gate, you win, and I'll have a prize for those who make it. But if we catch you, you become our prisoner. Understood?"
The girls understood the assignment.
When Daniela took her place beside her mother; Alcina beckoned and whispered something in her ear, while Cassandra and Bela readied themselves to run. You, on the other hand, were not yet prepared. Nervously adjusting your viridescent cloak, you didn't exactly know your way back to the castle. The lengthier, roundabout path was unfamiliar to you, so you'd just have to wing it and hope that you'd find your way. With each passing moment, this game was sounding less thrilling. A booming voice interrupted your thoughts.
"Go!" Cassandra shouted. She and Bela madly sprinted down one of the crooked paths. You watched Daniela charge after them as she laughed like a maniac.
"You had better run, little mouse."
You froze.
Spinning your head around, you caught Lady Dimitrescu staring at you with a hungry appearance, her previously softer features turned predatory. Her eyes dilated as she bared her teeth at you. She was ready to hunt. Briefly, your fear spiked, like you were a mouse needing to flee from a ravenous cat.
Adrenaline coursed through your body as you clumsily began to sprint down the same path that Cassandra and Bela had embarked upon. Embarrassingly, within the first few moments of your dash, your foot tripped over an exposed tree root, causing you to crash face-first to the ground. Sputtering, you plucked out some dead grass from your mouth. You didn't dare look behind you; you simply could not bear further humiliation.
A deep chuckle echoed behind you as you kicked yourself into gear and sped off into the woods. Terrifyingly, when you chose to look over your shoulder, Lady Dimitrescu was nowhere in sight. You were running in such haphazard directions that you hadn't a clue as to where you were going.
Each time you picked a path that seemed straightforward, it'd wind and take a sudden, unexpected turn. It felt like you were either running farther away from your desired destination or stumbling upon familiar sites repeatedly. Becoming short of breath and growing more exhausted, you decided it would be smarter to gain a bird's-eye view from higher ground to see if you could glimpse the village. You searched and noticed a large, oak tree nearby. Climbing trees was your forte. Being nimble, you scaled up the tree and crawled up its sturdy branches. From high up, you spotted the village and discerned which paths to take.
Relieved and hopeful that you could reach the gate in time, you heard rustling sounds from the bushes below you. Footsteps padded along the ground. Looking directly below you, you made out the wide-brimmed, black hat of your Mistress entering the scene.
Covering your mouth with your hand, your heart beat faster as you viewed Lady Dimitrescu scanning the area scrupulously. Eventually, she moved farther down the path leading to the village. Thinking of a bright idea, perhaps you could tail her and then bolt for the gate once it was in view. The idea was far more appealing than running.
Quietly, you made your way down the tree and suspended yourself from one of the higher branches, legs dangling and bracing themselves to land solidly on the land. Just as you were about to let go, you felt something grab one of your legs. Yelping, you lost your grip and fully expected to fall on your head. You shut your eyes tightly and waited for the pain to come. But it never did.
"There you are, my little mouse," Alcina cooed in your right ear. Her warm breath tickled your cheek. She cradled your small frame in her broad arms, your chest pressed up against hers. Somehow, this calmed your racing heartbeat. Your panicked eyes relaxed when you raised them to meet her spellbinding, gorgeous, yellow eyes. You remained speechless. "What's wrong, mouse? Cat got your tongue?"
Again, you said nothing. It was impossible to break eye contact with this goddess. Swelling with pride, her smile widened. "I believe you are now my prisoner, dear." She booped your nose. "Would you like to be mine?"
You blinked a few times at her words and almost nodded. Your fingers suddenly reached up and caressed her lower lip. As soon as you did that, you pulled your hand away as if it got burned. What were you thinking? Touching your Lady's lips just because you were hypnotized by her alluring eyes and beauty? You were about to apologize when Lady Dimitrescu leaned her head against your forehead, drawing your face closer as she brushed her nose against yours.
Breathing deeply, she restated her question. "Would you like to be mine, darling? I promise to keep you safe." As Alcina's ruby lips inched closer to yours, you leaned in the rest of the way, almost kissing her until loud giggles broke the intimate moment between the two of you.
Daniela managed to capture both her sisters. Afterwards, they waited inside the gate, but once enough time had passed, they grew worried about you and their mother. They came up with a new game of who could find either or the both of you the soonest.
As they noticed you in the lap of their mother, it dawned on them of what was about to happen. Their eyes grew large as they miserably failed to contain their girlish excitement. Cassandra waggled her eyebrows and blurted, "Mother! I see you've captured your prisoner?"
You covered your face with your hand and turned away from them, blushing and trying to sink into the earth. Lady Dimitrescu looked down at you again and beamed. "That I did, my daughter. That I did."
Alcina then lifted you up from the ground. She decided it was best to carry you bridal style all the way back to Castle Dimitrescu. Truly, even if you had won the game, there was no greater prize to be found beyond the gate, for your prize was already with you.
