It was an accident. A foolish accident. You were not aware that the fumes could deal this kind of damage. This was what you deserved for being overly curious.

Broken glass crunched underneath your feet as your hands fumbled for something to steady you. You weren't supposed to be in this room, sticking your nose in Alcina's business. She once warned you to not go into her lab. Yet, you couldn't resist peeking at the labels. Those differently shaped bottles were fascinating.

Being honest with yourself, you were unable to pronounce most of the labels. However, enunciating them made you feel like a genius. Inflated with confidence, you put on a heavy accent and started playing with the bottles, pretending to mix them to create an antidote that would cure people of their miseries.

During your wonderful time of goofing around, you mistakenly dropped one of them onto the floor. Its chemical substance was orange. As soon as it hit the floor, fumes started rising, and they got in your eyes. It hurt like the dickens. Luckily, the intense pain was fleeting, but its consequences weren't.

Aggressively rubbing your eyes over and over, you got the same result each time. Blindness. Was this irreversible? Panic surged through you as you stumbled forward. You wanted to scream
for help, but you didn't want to tell Lady Dimitrescu what you did, and you knew the girls would never stop pestering if you called on them.

Leaving the Hall of Pleasure, you trusted your hands to guide you down the corridor. It was then that you heard a bubbly voice singing a tune. It was from Janelle, the newcomer. She was the youngest of the maids. Being only 19 years old, she was a temporary, needing a job to support her family.

"Psst! Janelle!"

She picked up on the sound of someone's voice and backtracked. Spotting you, she smiled and waved. "My lady! What are you doing down there?"

You leaned against the wall. "Hey, come here, would you?"

"Of course! You need help with something?" As she got closer to you, she stopped. "Are...are you okay? You look a little dazed?"

"I need your assistance, I can't see anything at this moment."

"Oh my gosh! Really? What happened?" She rushed over to you and held you by the arm to support you. "I should tell Lady Dimitrescu, she could help-"

"No, no, no." You gripped her arm and yanked her back before she could leave. "Don't tell her just yet. I need your help to guide me to the bathroom. All I need is to splash some water in my eyes, I think.

"What did you do?"

"I was messing with some bottles and accidentally dropped one of them. It released fumes that burned my eyes."

"That doesn't sound good. Yeah, I can help you, just take my arm." Just then, the both of you heard Alcina's voice calling out your name. "I think she's looking for you. She's coming up the stairs."

"What? No, I don't want her to find me! Janelle, I need you to cover for me. Actually, I've a better idea. Lead me to the dressing room."

"But why? You can't even see any of the dresses."

You let out an exasperated sigh. "Janelle, just help me hide."

"Okay, okay." She led you to the room and looked around. "So, where do you wish to hide? There's a sofa?"

"There should be an enormous wardrobe, we can hide in there."

"We?" she squeaked. "But I don't want to get into trouble with Lady Dimitrescu."

"Don't worry," you patted her arm, "you won't, I promise. I'll tell her I forced you to help me. Now let's get inside, I can hear her coming."

It was true. Alcina continued to call out your name as she sought your company. Her steps were getting closer.
