A group of young women slowed their pace once they were near Castle Dimitrescu. They murmured to each other while staring at the imposing structure covered in frost. The ominous view gave them a shiver.

The first woman, bundled in her shawl, spoke up among her friends. "We shouldn't be here. The villagers have warned us about this place. What if the countess sees us?"

"Don't be foolish," a second woman said. "Even if she did, I doubt she would concern herself with commoners like us."

The third woman added her comment. "She's not the only one we ought to fear. There is another one like her."

"Lady Dimitrescu and her brood of vipers are the only ones who reside in this castle," the first woman explained. "Rumor has it that she is a vampire."

"Who bathes in the blood of her victims? Please say that you don't buy into that nonsense. It's a travesty. No one has seen it."

"That's because everyone says no one lives long enough to tell others about it. Once you find yourself trapped in Castle Dimitrescu, you cannot escape. You become its prisoner forever."

"Forever is a bit of a stretch. You both are frightening yourselves with these imaginative tales. Let me remind you they're only legends, ladies. You'd encounter these kinds of moments only in books, never in reality." The woman then lifted her gaze to the sky and opened her hands, feeling how the crystal flakes caressed her skin. "We should hurry home. We wouldn't want to be caught in a storm." She turned from the castle to head into the forest. Her friends cast wary looks at the castle for a little longer before they rushed to catch up with her.

The women scurried away like scared mice. Behind a heavy drape, the silhouette of a figure lingered in one window of the castle. She frowned when the humans disappeared from her sight. "Aw, I wanna play with them."

Her eldest sister tugged on her hood from behind, causing her to stumble backwards away from the window. "Daniela, it's starting to snow. It's too cold for us to go after them."

The 9-year-old red-haired girl held on to the curtain with one hand. "But there are three of them! That means each of us gets a human!"

"No. Not today." Bela pulled on her harder, trying to break her sister's iron grip on the curtain. "Girl, let go! You're going to tear it!"

"But I'm sad!" Daniela wailed, dropping to the floor in despair. She flopped around like a galumphing seal. "I want a human plaything!"

'"As I've already said, not today. It's Mother's and Mom's anniversary. Today is about them, not hunting." Grabbing Daniela by the ankles, Bela struggled to haul her body across the floorboards. "Come on, Dani! They're going to dance soon. We don't want to miss it."

Daniela maintained her role as an encumbrance. "Isn't Cass supposed to play the piano this evening?"

"Yes."

The redhead's eyes brightened with hope as she lifted her head. "Will you dance with me?"

She reacted with a grimace to Daniela's mischievous smile, fighting the urge to roll her eyes. "Maybe."

"No, promise! I'm not going anywhere until you agree to dance with me. Make your choice."

"You are such a brat," Bela laughed. "Fine, I'll be your dance partner. Happy?"

Without delay, Daniela got up and offered her hand. "Now, now, ask me nicely! You need to escort me to the dance floor as if I were a royalty."

Bela reached for her hand, giving it a playful shake. "Very well. Your Majesty, will you accompany me to the ball tonight?"
