Catching Her Attention

You regretted leaving your laptop open in the living room. Had you left it closed, even halfway, perhaps it would not have piqued the curiosity of your wife, driving her to take a sneak peek at your works. How could you have been so careless?

She evaluated every sentence. Every word. "What is this?"

"Alci, would you please close that? I'm writing a couple of stories."

"Since when did you become interested in writing stories? That's wonderful!" She balanced your laptop on her leg while she sipped on her glass of iced tea. "What are they about?"

You were in the middle of spreading mayonnaise on another piece of bread and doing a rather sloppy job at it because of being distracted. Self-consciously, you stepped out from the kitchen and waved your plastic knife at her. "I only just started working on those about a month ago. Uh, just a private pastime of mine."

Smirking at you, Alcina began scrolling up on your touchpad and skimming your paragraphs. "Private? Are you hiding something from me?"

"Of course not." Feeling rather hot in the face, you cleared your throat. "I'm just a little shy about sharing my writing with others."

"What's this one about?"

You frowned at her. "You have to promise that you won't laugh at me."

Her eyes sparkled with glee as she glanced up at you from the sofa. "Why would I ever laugh at you? I think you're mistaking me for my sister."

"Oh, Lord, never let Donna get her hands on that. She would tease me relentlessly and then make fun of them on Facebook or something." You then released a deep sigh and took the risk of revealing your little, secret hobby. "I wanted to write a children's book, or at least a short story that maybe seven or eight-year-olds would enjoy?"

"Aw, that's sweet. What's it about? It seems you have eight chapters already written?"

"Yes, it's about―and don't laugh at me, a ladybug that lives in a garden. There's a little girl who is having trouble making friends at school. She deals with this bully who keeps crushing all of her things, like the flowers she collects during recess, her lunch, her pencils, and so forth."

"And the ladybug?"

"Well, it gives her company. When the girl comes home, she likes to play in the garden, and that's when she notices this ladybug crawling around in it. She starts talking to it and sharing about what goes on at school and how lonely she feels. Uh, as the story progresses, it kinda becomes her friend."

"That's adorable," she smiled, loving how sentimental you could be. Clicking on a different tab, she was pleasantly surprised to find much lengthier and more detailed chapters. "And what is this story about?"

"Eh, no!" Tossing the bread and knife onto the kitchen table, you hurried over to her to attempt to pry your laptop out of her hands. "Alcina! Don't read that! That one is off limits!"

She angled your screen away from your view. "My, my, you have seventeen chapters so far." Cocking her head to the side, she struggled to comprehend what she was reading. "Grinding? What are these characters doing? Oh." Her eyes widened at the screen, for she found herself astounded by your uninhibited and descriptive narrative. "Oh."

"Nothing! They're doing nothing!" You then climbed onto her lap and desperately clawed at her hands to get it back. Alcina merely lifted her hips upward, causing you to slide off her and then fall to the wooden floor with a thud.

"This doesn't seem like nothing." She then stretched out one of her legs and pressed her foot against the center of your chest to keep you from reaching her with your short arms. "A steamy romance. They're already going at it?" She let out a deep chuckle. "You have them making love on the sand?"
