Kicking the car door shut with your foot, you struggled to balance the dish you had made for your daughter's big day. Alcina had reminded you of the dessert she loved. Hopefully, it wasn't a total disaster.
Knocking on the door, you didn't have to wait long until your youngest threw it open, greeting you with her cheerful face. "Mom! You don't have to knock, come in! Come in!" She pulled you in and brightened upon seeing the gift you had tucked under your arm. "Ooh, is that for me?"
With a puckish smirk, you gave the wrapped box a pat. "Well, maybe it's for one of your sisters?"
"Really funny!" She snatched it from you and then took the dessert. "Aw, one of my favorites! Thanks!"
"Yeah, it's no problem, honey. Uh, is your mother around?"
"She's in the kitchen finishing the cake. You're hanging around this evening, right?"
"Of course I am! I wouldn't miss your birthday for anything."
"Mom!" Bela greeted, wearing a silly, party hat that was shaped like a cylinder. She hugged you and beckoned you to give her your coat. "You're early!"
"Yeah, I got a head start before the roads got bad. So, what have you guys been doing today?"
"Mostly helping Mother in the kitchen and bugging her," Daniela giggled. "We listened to my favorite playlists and just relaxed."
"Sounds nice." You then you pointed at Bela's head. "Do I have to wear one of those for the party?"
With an eye-roll, Daniela gave her hat a finger flick and was almost successful at knocking it off. "Why are you still wearing that ridiculous thing?"
Annoyed, Bela caught and repositioned it on her head."You know, I would think you'd be happy that I put so much effort into making these for you."
"You didn't make those! You got them off Etsy or whatever!"
"And you still haven't put one on..."
"I'd rather wear a hat that looks like a volcano," she retorted.
Confused, you looked around the house. "Where's Cass?"
"She's up in her room," Bela answered. "She, uh, said she'll come down once we're all ready to serve up."You gave her an understanding nod, but you knew in your heart that she didn't want to see you. Your relationship with Cassandra had only gotten more complicated with time. "That's fine."
"Don't just stand there! You should see the cake Mother's made, it's awesome! I know I'm going to blow out all the candles in one go." Daniela then turned toward her sister. "And you're going to video it!"
"For your three followers on Instagram?" Bela quipped. "Or is it Twitter?"
"Neither!"
Going into the kitchen, a part of you was edgy about seeing Alcina again. From your last conversation, you were convinced she wanted little to do with you. Holding in your mixed emotions, you took a deep breath.
Alcina was focused and precise with frosting the edges of the cake. So consumed, in fact, that she failed to notice your presence until Bela cleared her throat awkwardly. She then set down her spatula nervously. "Y/N, you came early."
