Dragging the cat into the room against its will, Elana shushed her twin to follow her quietly. Her mother was on the phone. Her plan wouldn't work unless she had her wide-brimmed hat.
Alex carried a stool in his arms as he glanced at his sister, nervous. "Mommy's busy and talking."
"I know, that's why it's the best time to get her hat," Elana pointed her finger at her head. "Put the stool behind her and get it."
He feared angering his mother. She'd hate being interrupted. "Why do I have to do it?"
From the cat's pitiful mewl, Elana struggled to hold Cici's weight. "I'm holding her, I'm busy. You have to do it cuz' your hands are free."
"You told me I could hold the cat!"
"I said you could after we get it. She needs a boat!"
Alex huffed before he furtively pushed his stool behind his mother's tall figure. Already, her voice sounded serious. The last thing he wanted was for her to turn around and see him. Climbing onto it, he stood on his tippy-toes, stretching as high as he could. Even with his outstretched arms, he wasn't anywhere close to her mid-waist.
Elana let out a discouraged sigh. They needed a taller stool. Considering her mother's stature, Alex would require a ladder. Elana wondered why she didn't look more like you. When she had seen the children like her from the village, their parents weren't anywhere close to her height. She had once asked you if her mother was suffering from a disease of sorts. Your response then was simple: Alcina was very special, much like them.
She signaled him with her hand and mouthed, 'Climb!'
He hesitated, shaking his head at her out of reluctance. She then prompted him to hurry it up. Alex wished his sister would do it. Instead, she was being a scaredy-cat, he thought. She was no better than the lethargic and lazy cat hanging over her arms. He jumped and caught hold of the bustle of her dress. His grip slipped and his little feet missed the stool.
"Please pardon me for a moment." From hearing her son's body thud to the ground, Alcina covered the phone speaker and looked behind her. Raising her eyebrow at her odd child, she was at least thankful that he hadn't hurt himself and cried. "Alex! What are you doing?"
He rolled onto his side like a wounded soldier and pointed up at her. "C–can we have your hat?"
She then took a quick look at her daughter, who was hiding her face behind the cat. "I suppose. But please leave the room with your sister."
Giving a happy clap, Alex bounced up to his feet and threw out his arms, waiting for her to hand it over. He was instantly hit in the face by her hat, which she dropped on him. The oversized hat looked silly on his tiny head. Elana broke out into giggles as she watched his genuine confusion as to why he couldn't see.
Alcina sent her a stern look and raised her finger to her lips. She didn't want to be interrupted for a second time. Elana hunkered down and took silent steps toward her brother, who flung the saucer shaped hat to the floor.
"It's ours!" he declared with a victorious grin.
"Shh! We have to be quiet or Mommy will be upset. Flip it over and then Cici can sail away."
Alex turned the hat on its crown and held it steady for Elana to shove the poor, terrified creature into it. Cici's pathetic cries and meows were ignored and only further distracted Alcina from her important call. She turned her attention to them and made a motion with her hand to cut it out. Her frustration was building. This wasn't the time for her twins to be playing near her.
They became mum and tried to force Cici to comply with their game. The cat was not having it. Her ears flattened and with a sharp hiss, she struck Elana's hand with its claws. She let out a squeal of pain as Cici jumped out of her hold and fled from the hellish duo that only sought to add more misery to her life. Alex darted after the cat, yelling and demanding her to come back.
