Placing the earbuds in your ears, you sniffled, pushing away your all-consuming, dark thoughts that threatened to swallow you whole. It had been such a rough year so far. You were let go from your job a couple of weeks ago. You had caught your fiancée cheating on you with your best friend, and then they shifted all the blame on you because of how distant you had become after losing your mother. In your mind, everything was falling apart.

Once you lost your mother, it felt like a huge part of you died inside. She was one of the brightest lights in your life. Every day, you sensed her absence. When it came to your fiancée, you were supposed to be married this summer. It was to be a beautiful beach wedding, and all thanks to your best friend, she went behind your back and stole the heart of the woman you thought you'd share your whole life with. Double betrayals doubled your heartache.

You felt alone in the universe, and although there were good people in the world, you couldn't bring yourself to connect with them. It was too hard. Emotionally, you detached and alienated yourself from others without realizing it.

Jogging through the park, you were thankful that running was one of the few positive outlets that provided a temporary escape. Your feet could carry you endlessly and take you anywhere. Far away from your apartment, your mother's home, and the neighborhood that your fiancée had promised you'd love.

Running through this area of the park wasn't the wisest idea. It was known for being unsafe even in the early evening hours. But tonight, you didn't care. You just wanted to flee from your crippling despair.

It was most unfortunate for you that you didn't hear the person approaching from behind you. Their large and clammy hand covered your mouth, sending your body into a panicked state. With your heart racing, you yanked out your earbuds and whirled around to face your assailant. It was a man wearing a white ski mask.

You yelled at him to back off, shoving your hand against his jaw to break free from his powerful grip. Filled with rage, he slapped you hard in the face, which sent you spinning to the ground. Overcome with dizziness, you were uncoordinated and unable to get up in time. He took the opportunity to drag you off behind a tree to do God knows what.

Tears streamed down cheeks as you continued to fight him off, kicking and screaming for help. He was too heavy to push off. A part of you was ready to give up altogether. If there was a chance that your mother had gone to a better place, maybe you would get to join her shortly.

The strength you had left was dwindling at a significant rate, and soon enough, you'd lose this battle. You stopped punching his chest and let your arms fall out to the side; you knew you couldn't win. In your eyes, there was no reason to fight for a life you would rather not live.

Hearing his contemptuous laughter, he drew out his switchblade and mumbled something about how you made things much easier for him. You turned your face away from him, focusing on the tree above you. A leaf fell off a branch. For some peculiar reason, you believed for a moment that it was your mother's way of distracting you before your time was up. Closing your eyes, you waited for all of this to be over, so you could be reunited with your loved ones.

It came as a great shock to you when your attacker's weight was suddenly off you. Lifting your head, he was clutching his forehead and crying out in pain. Frightened and clueless, your eyes darted to the shadowy figure of a towering woman who delivered another heavy blow to the side of his face with her long, white cane. She didn't stop as she continued to swing, striking him mercilessly on the skull.

Groaning, he clumsily got to his feet and managed to sprint out of the park, wounded. You couldn't believe it. Some tall elderly lady just kicked his ass and saved your life.
