How easy it was to hear the cries of the twins from all areas of the castle. Today would be no different. As you hurried and turned the corner, you found Alex lying face down on the floor and spread out like a starfish. His tiny body jolted with each hiccup, his crying becoming louder with each step you took toward him. His fingers were still loosely holding on to the hilt of his wooden sword.
Deeply concerned, you reached out for him, placing your hand on his back. "Alex, what's wrong?"
Weakly lifting his head and looking at you through his blurry vision, he clung to you, similar to how he would to his stuffed bear each night. "Mama!" Many thanks to Bela's nearly overwhelming collection of plushies, the twins were never deprived of their selection of animals they wanted to snuggle with.
"Did you fall and hurt yourself?"
"They won't let me play with them!" His fat tears continued to stream down his fuller cheeks as he balled his fist into your clothing. Another one of his self-soothing behaviors whenever he was distressed.
You weren't sure if he was referring to the servants or his sisters. For the most part, the castle's staff in were his and his sister's playmates. They'd cease their current duty and give them chase or let them play around them while they worked. The kitchen crew were the worst, as Alcina had put it: They'd never deny them sweets whenever they came around them with those puppy dog eyes, claiming they were hungry or sad from a new 'boo-boo' they had gained. Indeed, their appetite had been ruined on many occasions, but you had to admit that you found it endearing. As long as they weren't stuffed full before their mealtimes, a cookie or cornulete given intermittently wasn't going to flip their schedules upside down.
"They're in the blanket fort and won't let me in," he sniveled in between words. "I want to color, too."
"Ah, your sisters, gotcha. Well, why don't we find them, hm?" You got up from the floor, carrying him and his sword to wherever they were. "We'll have a little chat with them, okay?"
Every other week, your daughters would choose a different room to set up their fort, so you had Alex keep pointing you in the direction he last saw them until he suddenly aimed his finger elsewhere. "It's Mim Mim!"
Behind a knight's statue was a figure who was partially concealed by the plated shield. "Miriam?"
She popped her head out from around it, and you almost laughed aloud at how confused she looked. "Y/N? Is it safe to come out?"
"What do you mean?"
"Elana is trying to find me." Feeling her hip go into spasm from crouching too long in that uncomfortable position, she forced herself to stand up. The thought then passed through her mind of how her body was getting too old for these kinds of games.
"Good heavens. How long have you been hiding there?"
"I'm unsure, perhaps at least thirty minutes?"
"Well, I hate to break up your game, but Elana's moved on to a different game, it seems. She's in a blanket fort with her other sisters."
"Wait, are you serious?" She let out a low groan as she stepped out and stretched her back, curving her spine while chuckling to herself that she would've stayed hidden for another good thirty minutes before giving up. "I'm glad to learn that now. I need to find the other maidservants and inform them that Elana's changed activities."
"How many of you are hiding?" you laughed, always grateful to your friend for indulging your children's whims and playing along with them. She was fantastic with them and became their beloved 'Mim Mim," much to Donna's displeasure. Out of her jealousy, she once tried to induce Miriam with her hallucinations and had proven unsuccessful only because of your intervention. You had to assure your eccentric sister-in-law that she would not miss out on her chance to forge a lasting bond with them.
