[Request by JuliettaArphonia   This one-shot goes back to when the reader is unmarried and a maid]

Overhearing your giggles and chatter with her made Alcina's blood boil. The countess was already regretting her decision of hiring that new maid. As soon as Liliana started her first day of work, Alcina noticed how you gravitated toward her instantly, welcoming and speaking to her as if you were her dearest friend or lover. She couldn't tell which one.

It wasn't long ago that you made love. You had even told Alcina you loved her back. Was that still true? She doubted it anytime she had to tolerate Liliana's presence around you.

Tonight was no different. Usually, you'd sit next to her during dinner, or at least with one of her daughters, yet not this time. Across the table, you and Liliana were seated next to each other, making jokes and even playing with your food, which only added fuel to Alcina's fire. Her girls weren't helping the matter, either. They were too busy entertaining the both of you, competing with one another over who could make you laugh the most.

While everyone else was as merry as a grig, the lady of the castle could not share in the same revelry. Making eye contact with you, she smiled. "So, what do you think of the meal?"

"It's wonderful! I'm glad you didn't assign me to the kitchen staff because I'd never leave the food."

"We know you wouldn't," Liliana snickered, stealing another baby potato from your plate. "You'd be my chunky pup."

You grinned and smacked her fork with yours. "Stop taking my potatoes! You've plenty."

"But you're letting your food get cold."

"Because you keep distracting me."

"Distracting" was an accurate word, Alcina thought. Liliana kept distracting you from her, which she would not tolerate for much longer. She clenched her fist under the table. Her jealousy burned over how you could take to this woman so fast. Why was it that she was the one who got your brightest smile? It was maddening. Alcina questioned if she ought to fire the girl, or have Bela lead her deep into the forest and then abandon her.

You seemed so happy around her. Alcina did not want to stamp out your happiness, no matter how infuriating she found Liliana to be. What troubled her was that Liliana knew you better than she did. It was like a crime to her. How dare someone else have your heart? How dare she make you smile and laugh?

Further torturing herself with such thoughts, Alcina left her meal unfinished and dismissed herself, making an excuse that she had business to attend to. It wasn't exactly a lie. There was always work to do.

When Lady Dimitrescu got up and walked out, you watched her with furrowed eyebrows. "Where are you going, Alcina?"

It never failed to bring a smirk to her face whenever you called her by her name. No more "My lady" this or "My lady" that. You weren't bashful anymore. "I have work, dearest."

When she left, Liliana leaned into your ear. "Aw, she called you "dearest." How sweet is that? Are you two a thing?"

You lowered your voice when you heard the girls giggling among themselves. "I already told you about that. Now hurry and eat your dinner, or else you're not getting any dessert."

"But we get ours, right?" Daniela asked eagerly.

You aimed your fork at her. "Not until that plate is clean, little missy. I still see vegetables."

Cassandra rolled her eyes. "We're not kids, you know!"

Lifting your chin, you shot her a playful look. "Only kids say that, honey. Finish your green beans."
