Melting Her Heart

The rain fell in steady, glean drops of silver outside the patio door. It was the ideal day to stay inside. Your foot massaged the length of your other calf as you relaxed and read reviews on your tablet.

Hearing the front door swing open, you watched the girls dart inside a little faster than usual. How atypical. They, or at least one of them, would always greet you whenever they got back from school.

You then heard a busy shuffling in the kitchen, indistinct talking, and something heavy thudding to the tile floor. Sighing, you set your tablet on the coffee table and checked on your crazy daughters to learn what on earth they could be up to now. Entering the kitchen, Cassandra was whispering in Daniela's ear as Bela madly searched and fussed through the cupboards, presumably seeking for something to eat.

"What are we supposed to feed it? We have nothing it'd like, except bread, maybe?" Bela questioned.

"I don't think it can live off that, but that seems to be the only thing we could try for now," Daniela responded.

"Feed what?"

Their heads whipped around to face you, appearing anxious. Cassandra abandoned her spot and hugged you. "Mom! Hey, we were just talking about being hungry. We're figuring out what Bela should eat."

"What should I eat?" Bela asked, puzzled by her sister's remark. Daniela nudged her in the arm rather hard and cleared her throat, giving her a knowing look to not say anything more.

"Yes. What Bela should eat," Cassandra reiterated.

"Well, there's enough bread for you to make yourselves toast or a sandwich." You glanced at your watch. "Your mother should be home with the groceries at any minute."

A weak whimper then sounded in the room, coming from Cassandra's backpack, which was lying on the floor behind a stool.

Your eyes widened. "What was that?"

Cassandra placed her hands on your shoulders and pushed you back. "Nothing! It was Dani because she has the hiccups."

Daniela's head bobbed up and down fast. "Yeah, I got the hiccups." She then attempted to imitate the same sound, which only led her to choke on her own saliva.

"You all are really terrible at lying, you know that? But, it's something I'm thankful for. Just tell me what's inside."

"Homework," Bela answered. Daniela and Cassandra scowled at their sister, their eyes conveying the message: 'No shit, Sherlock!'

A loud yelp came from her bag, which caused all of you to jump. You tried to get around Cassandra, who kept blocking your path.

"Cass! Let me see what's inside your backpack! I know you guys have something alive in there."

"Just promise you won't be mad at us! And don't tell Mother, either," Cassandra begged, grabbing your arm and preventing you from peeking inside.

"Cass, let go of my arm!" You found childlike behavior to be comical. "I promise I won't be mad at any of you, but I won't make any promises about not telling your mother."

"But she's going to be upset if you do!" Bela fretted, growing more worried by the minute.

"Well, if she's going to be upset, then you probably shouldn't have-" You then heard a bark.
