Your hand was soaked with blood. Your blood. It soaked through your beige officer's uniform right above your belt. Every time your heavy boots took another step forward, the pain only worsened. You were certain a bullet was lodged somewhere in your gut.

Unfortunately, your squad hadn't made it out of the skirmish. Being the only survivor left, you had a long road back to the military base. But there was a rather large "if" hanging over your head. If you bled out here in the vineyard, you bet your body wouldn't be found for some time. Whomever the winery owner was, they'd be in for a shock.

You needed rest. Beginning to taste blood inside your mouth, you fell into the dirt among the neat rows of vines. At a distance, you could see the rising sky of fire revealing a fine manor house nestled in the woodland. Its tall windows provided a broad view of the alpine highlands and grassy meadows. Had it been closer to you, maybe your cry for help would've been heard. Pressing your hand into your gaping injury to stop the bleeding, you hissed and closed your eyes. A moment's rest would do you good. If only for a moment.

Elsewhere in the fields, the eldest Dimitrescu daughter bent down to brush a greening grapevine with her finger. She smiled at how healthy they looked. "You know, despite this war, I think mother's going to have a promising season this time."

"Let's hope this war ends soon," Daniela said, plucking a single grape and popping it into her mouth. "I'm ready for it to be over."

"Aren't we all?" Cassandra wandered down a different row from her sisters because she was bored. When she did, however, she went wide-eyed, seeing your body on their property. "Intruder! We've got an intruder!" If you were some sort of drunken idiot, thief, or vagabond, she would kick your ass off these fields.

Startled from hearing her sister's warlike cry, Bela pushed her way through the slender, coiling stems and found her. "Cass! What are you shouting about?"

"Look!" Cassandra gestured toward you and picked up her pace. "Trespasser! I'm going to kill them!" Reaching your cold and semiconscious body first, she kicked the bottom of your boot twice. "Hey! You! Wake up!"

"Oh, my God, Cass! Stop!" Daniela was freaking out and worried her sister might do something crazy. "They might be dead!"

"Leave their body alone!"  Bela yelled.

After kicking your boot a few more times, Cassandra got down on her hands and knees to get a closer look at your muddy face. Picking up a twig, she poked your cheek with it. "I saw her nose twitch!" Knowing that you weren't a dead body like she feared, she breathed a deep sigh of relief. "She's alive!"

Suddenly stirring from your sleep, you went on red alert and flung out your automatic pistol, pulling its hammer back and cocking it to the rear. You took your aim at the three strangers, who stared at you like you were an alien from another planet. Regretting that you let your guard down, you attempted to scare them off. "Stay back!"

"She's got a gun!" Daniela screamed, leaping over into the next row of vines and nearly tripping over herself. "Ruuun!"

Frantically, Daniela sprinted back to her house, intending to fetch her mother. For you were not the only trespasser they'd seen on their land. During the war, there had been several interlopers and thieves in their fields. But their mother never allowed them to stay for very long. Not without facing severe punishment.

"Dani!" Bela shouted after her. She then raised her hands at you, praying that you wouldn't pull the trigger on them. "Wait! Wait! Don't shoot us!"

Had you not given Cassandra a heart attack from your abrupt awakening and brandishing a pistol near her face, she would've had the courage to tackle and disarm you. "Put your gun away, lady! Sheesh, you are too much alive. I liked you better when you were playing dead!"
