Three weeks after that incident with Laura, Alcina doubled her efforts to include you in every activity with her family. It was her wish that you didn't spend too much time alone. You didn't need to feed your depressing thoughts or remember anything about that woman. Alcina's anger spiked as she could not comprehend how someone like Laura could be so blind as to not see your worth. Laura had better steer clear of you because Alcina promised herself that as long as she was around, she would forbid that troll from speaking to you.

"I think I've finally got it! Are you ready to hear it?" You were thrilled you were learning the beginnings of how to read braille to better relate and understand a little more about her world. Alcina was all too happy to teach you, so you'd join her in reading and allow her to show you her braille alphabet models.

"I'm always ready. Let's see how you do."

"Okay, here we go." You gave her the braille model and jogged your memory to test if you could spell her name without looking. "One dot is 'A'. Three dots vertically is 'L'. 'C' is easy, it's two dots running horizontally. Two dots running diagonally makes 'I'. 'N' is four dots?"

"Yes, close enough. Keep going."

"And then we're back to 'A' again, which is one dot."

"Good!" She then gave a small clap of approval. "Keep this up, and you'll be reading some of my books in no time."

You laughed and tried peeking at the model again. "You're just being too nice. I only spelled your name, and I got stuck on the 'N' letter, anyway."

"Darling, we just started lessons five days ago. I don't expect you to know the entire braille alphabet. You're making progress. That is what matters. Just wait until you've mastered all the letters, and then we'll move on to sentences."

"I look forward to that." Crossing your legs, you stared at her bowl of vanilla. "I have an idea. If I can spell "sprinkles" without looking, I get to add them to your ice cream."

The cutest grin appeared on her face. "A challenge? Very well, go ahead. But if you make a mistake, you have to take a bite of mine."

"Deal!" You shut your eyes and did your best to recall the letters again. "Two dots straight up, with one dot to the right is 'S.' 'P' is three dots up and one to the right. R is three dots down and, shoot, I can't remember where the single dot goes. It's next to either the bottom or middle dot." You bit your lip, concentrating harder. "The bottom?"

She dipped her spoon in and then handed it to you along with the model. "Good try, but you've lost. Practice makes perfect."

You rolled your eyes at her and then wrapped your lips around her spoon. Perhaps now would be the time to ask her about her blindness and how long she's had it. "I'll be right back. Bathroom." You got up and left the booth, thinking of how to phrase your question carefully.

While Alcina continued to hum a vague tune and twirl her bowl around, she contemplated how she was going to ask you if you'd like to become her girlfriend. She always knew how she felt about you. It had been seven months since the day she found and rescued you from that nearly fateful day. She was so proud of you, more so than she could ever convey. Healing was a journey, and despite the hardships you faced with your losing your mother, ex-fiancé and friend, she believed you were much stronger than you gave yourself credit for.
