When he rolled over and dropped his bear on the floor, Alex grabbed his flashlight from his nightstand and shined it on his furry friend, whose ear was partially torn off thanks to his sister. He had no intention of leaving the comfort of his bed to pick his friend up. "El? Hey, El? Are you awake?"
Across from him, his sister was hiding under her blankets, shining her light and working on her activity. "No, I'm sleeping."
"Fibber," he grinned. "Can you get Dorin for me? He's on the floor."
Elana peeked her head over her covers and flashed her light directly in her twin's face. "Are you serious? Just get out of bed and grab him."
"I don't wanna, he's too far."
"Lazybones. You're too lazy or too scared?"
"I'm not any of those!"
"I bet you're scared! Scared of the dark, that's why you have your flashlight."
"Take that back, I'm not scared!" Alex then pointed his light at the wall closest to her bed. "You're using a nightlight and your flashlight. Now tell me who's really scared?"
She switched off her light and dug her feet deeper into her blankets. "Still you. You could've picked up your bear by now. Okay, prove to me that you're not scared by getting Dorin. Then I'll take back what I said."
"That's too easy!" He tossed his blankets off himself and swung his legs around to jump off his mattress, but not before his sister raised her hand.
"But, beware of the Bau-Bau! He could snatch you by the legs and drag you under."
Alex froze and sat back on his pillow. "The...what?"
"The Bau-Bau. He's an evil man who lives under kids' beds. He kidnaps them and takes them to a place where their parents can never find them. You know what's really crazy? He can take the form of a wolf, too."
Her brother raised his knees to his chest; his heart skipped a beat. The very thought that this evil monster could take children away from their parents was too horrible for him to imagine. "What does he look like as a man?"
"He wears a long, black coat, and he has a hood that totally covers his face. So, when he's pulling you under with him, you won't see his face. Just more darkness. He only transforms into a wolf if you escape his hold and try to run outside." Hearing Alex's audible gasp, Elana's lips twisted into a sick smile. "And he's got fingers made of ice! Yeah, they're so cold that when he touches you, he freezes your heart to stop it, so you can't scream for help."
He grit his teeth at her and was breathing hard. "You're lying!"
"If I'm lying, then get your bear! Just be fast."
"He's probably under your bed," Alex scoffed. "I'll show you."
As soon as his feet hit the rug, Elana screamed and frantically pointed at the bottom of his bed. "It's the Bau-Bau! His icy fingers are going to get you!"
Terror streaked through Alex and within a moment, he collapsed where he stood, screaming louder than his sister while crying for you. "Mama! Help!"
Elana was too busy laughing on her back to take him seriously. She even thought he was only pulling her leg, which would not work. Not on her. "Be quiet! You're going to get us in trouble!" Despite her continual pleading for him to stop crying like a wounded animal, she jumped out of her bed and rushed over to him. "Get up, Alex! Come on!" When she tried to pull him up by the arm, he jerked it away from her and crawled to the farthest corner of the room with his bear.
If he was doomed to be taken away by the Bau-Bau forever, then he'd need Dorin to be with him, so they could face the eternal darkness that awaited them together. "Leave me alone!"
