Since you couldn't sleep very well, you rose early and thought you'd brew coffee for your fiancé. Honestly, you could use a cup yourself. Descending the cedar staircase with nimbleness, you pulled out the percolator from the box and switched it on.
Holding the drink, you headed for the stairs until you noticed an object lying on top of the console table near the TV. Time stood still. You didn't even register the mug dropping from your hand and shattering onto the floor. The racing sound of your heartbeat increased as you couldn't tear your eyes from it.
Moments later, feet shuffled from the room upstairs and headed down the hallway. Alcina called out your name a few times until she found you sitting on the bottom step. Seeing how visibly upset you were, she shook your shoulders to get your attention.
"What happened?" She surveyed the mess and checked your body to see if you sustained any injuries.
"Please, tell me you brought that inside last night..."
"Brought what inside?"
With a shaky hand, you pointed at the object on the table. Alcina's eyes followed your finger. Her confusion was palpable. "Is that what's troubling you?" She got up and took the ball in her palm, rolling it around and squeezing it. "I don't understand?"
"Neither do I. I was going to bring you a cup of coffee, so we could have our talk, but as you can see, it didn't turn out that way."
"It's okay, we'll clean it up," Alcina assured, her fingers curled around the ball. "I think now would be the best time for us to have that conversation."
She listened patiently as you shared about your finding of the ball, how it kept appearing in different spots despite having moved it, and the figure that you believed you saw last night during your sensual activity with her.
"Are you positive it was a child?"
"Yeah, I don't think it was a man, and not a woman, either."
"You think this child was the one who threw the ball at the window?"
Your face fell. "You don't believe me, do you?"
"I do believe you. I'm just trying to piece this together myself. So, where did this come from, then?" She handed the ball to you and got up to grab the paper towels.
"That's the creepiest part. That kid or whatever must've gotten inside? I mean, didn't I lock the door last night?"
"Well, you locked the car and then came back inside." Alcina tried the front door before coming over to you. "It's locked, so you must've. Are you sure you didn't pick it up when you were outside?"
"I know I didn't. I left it there on purpose because I wanted to see if it'd be there this morning. And yet, here it is." You threw the ball up into the air and failed to catch it; it rolled toward Alcina.
She stopped wiping up the spill and picked it up, studying it. "You know what? Let's get out of here and get some fresh air. It'll clear our heads. We'll ski like we planned this afternoon, and then we'll come back and give more thought to this." She tossed the ball back to you.
"Let's do that." You joined her to clean up the mess. "I'm sorry about all of this. This break was supposed to be enjoyable for the both of us, and all I'm doing is making things up in my head."
"Don't be sorry or hard on yourself. We've only just started our vacation, and we have plenty of time to work these matters out. I just don't want you to be stressed out over this."
"I'll try. Honest. Let's finish cleaning up, so I can scramble some eggs."
Noon came around, and you decided to leave the ball on the console table before locking the door and leaving with Alcina. During the drive, you asked her which manager mentioned the house. Perhaps you could inquire and learn more about the family that lived there. It was a start.
