Waking up on the floor, your muscles ached. It didn't seem right to take the bed because Alcina had told you she'd sleep elsewhere. This was almost too cruel, kicking a woman out of her bedroom. Well, your bedroom.
Looking at the bed, it was confusing knowing which side you slept on. Was it on the left or the right? Your spot must've been on the left, seeing how the other side of the mattress dipped more. Considering her more robust figure, it had to hers.
Perhaps brushing your teeth and then heading down to help make breakfast would be a good start. But then you remembered you might want to wear something different. Opening your closet, you recognized many of your older shirts and clothing from years ago, but the newer tops? Not so much. To your surprise, you held up a long, black gown. Placing it near your chest level, you were impressed. Alcina really was a tall woman. You quickly hung it back up when you heard a noise outside the door.
Daniela was on her hands and knees, trying to stuff a folded piece of paper under the opening, which was too narrow. It was important to her that you got her message.
"What are you doing?"
Daniela turned her head and lifted her finger to her lips. "Shh! Don't talk so loud! You might wake Mom up."
Bela let out a huff. "Your shushing's louder than my whispering. Really, why are you on the floor like that?"
"I'm trying to shove this note under her door so she'll see it."
"How come? What does it say?"
It says: 'Good morning!' Thought it'd be nice to start Mom's day off with a positive greeting? I dunno, I don't even know when she's waking up. Did you notice how Mother looked last night? And she slept on the sofa. Do you think they got into an argument ?"
Bela frowned and shook her head. "I doubt it. Mother wouldn't say much to me. You know how she gets whenever she's upset. She gives us those one-worded answers. I'm guessing she wanted to give Mom some space? You know, with her world being flipped upside down and all."
Daniela's shoulders dropped. She could not begin her day devoid of hope. "You mean ours, too, right?"
"Yeah...listen, why don't you just wish her a good morning when she comes out?"
"That's weird, though. She'll just open it and find me, a total stranger, standing right outside her door."
"And it might weird her out if she finds you trying to shove a paper under her door. Why don't we head downstairs and start breakfast? C'mon, let's go." Bela stooped down for her sister, which was right when you opened it.
Startled, you peered down at them. "Oh, hi there."
"Mom!" Immediately, Daniela stood too fast. She had been caught red-handed as she crackled her note in her fist. "Hi! You're awake! I mean, of course you would be, like you're an early bird, even during the weekends. Uh, good morning! I just wanted to check on you and say, um...good morning."
This poor, flustered girl. You had overheard some of what they had said. "Good morning, Daniela. And good morning to you, too, Bela."
It pleased Bela that you got her name right this time. "How'd you sleep?" She suddenly felt stupid. What a dumb thing to ask you. It had been an awful night for everyone.
