[Warning: Domestic abuse is presented in this chapter]
Near the Maiden of War, the crowd thinned out as the madman preached about sin and sacrifice. The message wasn't popular among the villagers. He proclaimed that the only way to be forgiven of your trespasses was to offer your body to the gods. You attempted to tune him out as he continued to blather about how people perpetuated the evilness of the world and how all would burn if they didn't make a sacrifice.
Moving through the crowd with your basket, you were on your way back to Castle Dimitrescu. Your purpose in visiting the village was to pick up eggs from one of the vendors. They were much fresher than the ones at the castle.
Earlier that afternoon, you informed Lady Dimitrescu that you would only be gone shortly. She insisted you take someone with you, and while you promised you would, you knew that you'd get the task done faster alone. It's not like you were trying to deceive her, but you couldn't find any of the girls, and one of the maids kept arguing with you that their eggs were just fine. Annoyed, you left the castle unannounced.
Being careful not to swing your basket, you walked away from the area and heard the preacher's words fading with the distance. The walk back was peaceful until you heard a man's voice calling out to you. Glancing behind you, it was that crazy, religious fanatic.
"Ma'am, wait!" he called out again, catching up to you. This fellow was burly and looked like he was in his early 50s. He wore a green overcoat and his facial hair was neatly shaven.
"I think you forgot this." He opened his hand, revealing an egg.
You were puzzled and didn't understand why this man would chase you down just to give you an egg. What was even weirder was that you had counted out a dozen eggs into your basket. You were certain that he was mistaken, but you gave him a polite smile. "Oh, thank you, sir. But I think there must be a mistake? I don't think that's mine."
The man's face fell. "What? No, I'm certain that this is yours. You were the woman buying the eggs from that vendor, right?"
You found it unnerving that he paid that much attention to you during his passionate rant. Not wanting to prolong this conversation with him, you decided it would be smart to accept the egg.
"Uh, yes, that was me. Thank you for noticing. Here, I'll take it." You reached out and took the egg from him. After you placed it in your basket, you hoped he'd turn and leave.
"Where are you headed?"
"Just back to where I'm employed."
"And where would that be?"
This guy was already giving you the creeps, and you didn't want him to know where you lived. "Just a little ways from here."
"You work at Castle Dimitrescu, don't you?"
That caught you off guard. Nervously shifting your body and taking a small step away from him, you answered with hesitation. "Yes, I do."
"My dear child!" A look of sympathy was written all over his face. "I am so sorry for you, you shouldn't have to live with that."
"Live with what?" This man's strange behavior was increasingly worrying you.
"Those demons," he replied coldly. "They're vampires, aren't they?"
