It was the perfect day to be out on a picnic together. The sun was brightly shining and the lush grass of the fields tickled your bare feet. However, you strained to hear the birds chirping and singing due to the squabbling of the girls.
"I told you to bring the extra bread rolls, not the eggs! Look at these, these aren't even hard-boiled." Cassandra threw the egg at Daniela. Daniela dodged it and watched it fall into the grass. The yoke leaked through the cracked eggshell.
Daniela sneered at her sister as she slowly clapped her hands. "Great, and now you just wasted a perfectly good egg, Cassandra. Bravo."
"It wasn't even Daniela's fault. It was one of the maids who packed the basket," Bela added, siding with Daniela.
You knew the girls loved each other to death, and would unquestionably risk their lives for one another. But every so often, they'd act as if they would fight to the death over the most ridiculous things you ever heard. Nevertheless, you admitted that you occasionally enjoyed their quarreling.
"Girls," Alcina Dimitrescu admonished. She didn't bother to look up from the pages of her book. "Each one of you was given two rolls each, that will be enough."
They became silent, scowling at one another and pulled out the rest of the eggs. You resumed the chapter of your book until you sensed someone's gaze on you. Turning in Alcina's direction, you noticed her eyes dart away from you. Curiously, you squinted and wondered if the sun glare was playing tricks on your vision.
Testing your theory, you acted as if you were absorbed in a chapter, waiting only a few moments before suddenly shifting your eyes toward her. She averted her gaze from you again. You were pleased to have your theory proven.
After the girls finished their lunch, they ventured off to a brook, leaving only you and Alcina sitting on the wool blanket which was spread out on the grass. Only a short time had passed before you heard the sound of Alcina closing her book.
"There's a walking path nearby. It has a trail of lovely flowers that I think you would enjoy seeing. I could show them to you if you wish."
Your eyes wandered from your book as you turned to look at her with a warm smile. "Sure, I would love that." Softly closing your book and setting it aside, you stretched and stood up. "Should I tell the girls we left?"
Alcina shook her head. "No. That won't be necessary. I have a feeling we will be back before them. There is no doubt they will take their time."
Leaving the area and walking beside her, she started conversing with you. "What kind of book are you reading?"
"A mystery novel. It's about these parents who are searching for their missing son..." You proceeded to share the plot of the text with her as she listened to you, enjoying your theatrical narration of the novel. She asked more questions and laughed at your analytical comments about the characters. You enjoyed each other's company as you discussed a variety of topics.
Once she led you to the path she spoke of, she was indeed right. Along the trail were an array of beautiful flowers: Acanthus, Fuchsia, Bellifolia, Lilac, and other flowers. Having much knowledge about flowers, Lady Dimitrescu was more than glad to tell you their names as you knelt down to inspect them.
Strolling farther along the path, you spotted a particular shaded-pink flower that stood out and fascinated you. It had five, large petals that felt incredibly soft against the tips of your fingers. The color of its pistil was amber.
Noticing your delighted reaction to that particular flower, Alcina smirked. "Ah, I see that you've found a Rosa canina. It's also known as the Dog-rose in this part of the land."
