Your feet carried you over the cobblestoned lane. Upon hearing a hound's bark not too far behind you, your heart raced as you took a sharp turn off the path and hid behind a haystack until the sound grew weaker. Peeking around, you rushed out again and sprinted to a nearby cottage located outside the castle's curtain wall.
Reaching the wooden splintered door of your friend's home, you banged on it relentlessly. "Let me in!"
When your friend answered it, she was stunned into silence. Slowly, yet forcibly, she expelled all breath as she tried to process your unexpected arrival. "What in the bloody hell? What are you doing out here?!"
Your eyes pleaded with her to hide you. "Please let me in!"
When you took a step beyond the threshold, she immediately shoved you back. "Are those murderous hounds coming after you? I can't let you in here. If those guards find out I've hidden you, they'll throw me in the dungeon!"
"Donna, you know I would never let that happen to you. I have some say over this kingdom. Remember?"
"Please! You have say over nothing when you're out here! Why are you out of your dreamy castle anyway?"
"Look, if I'm going to stand out here in the cold and explain, then you might as well let me in, hm? Don't tell me you've lost your sense of hospitality?"
Reluctantly, she paused and wrestled with her indecisiveness before letting you inside. "You better not get me into trouble, princess. And it's not that cold outside." Once you were inside, she locked her door and made sure her windows were concealed. "I have to say, I'm glad to see you. But why are you here?"
You rubbed your hands together and took down your hood. "I can't live like this. I don't belong in that palace. I feel like a simpleton."
Letting out a dramatic huff, Donna had you sit down. "For mercy's sake! You're many things, Y/N, but no simpleton."
"This kingdom seems so different from my father's."
"How so? Don't you all throw gold coins at peasants to make their lives better?"
"That's not what we did! We did good by the people and our aim was to improve their quality of life overall."
"That's what I just said. You graced them with your benevolence. Doesn't your middle-aged wife have any decency? Or is she some type of tyrant?"
You chewed your lip and shook your head fast. "No, Alcina isn't like that. She's a just ruler. Apart from that, I don't know her that well. We rarely speak."
"Well, I wouldn't expect you to be infatuated after five weeks of knowing each other," Donna snorted, suppressing her desire to tease you. "Things could be worse for you. She could be very controlling by assigning a guard to follow and report your every move to her. She doesn't hurt you, does she?"
You shook your head even faster. "No, no, not at all. She treats me with respect. And she never touches me at night."
Donna's eyes widened comically. "Oh, good heavens! I didn't know you two actually had to, uh, sleep together. So, what's it like sharing a bed with her? She had an attractive face at the ceremony. Is she a top or bottom? I bet you're a bottom. Do you have any embarrassing nicknames for her yet?"
Your face crimsoned. "Donna! I have no desire to sleep with a stranger. All she does is wish me a good night. Besides, she rises early. By the time I wake up, she's always gone. Alcina deals with all the politics and dignitaries. So far, I am tasked with running the large household, like managing servants, planning the menus, ordering supplies, and hosting feasts for the royal court. Next week, they want me to manage the budget."
