"Can the world buy such a jewel?" Alcina quoted the famous Shakespearean line from the stage with her sonorous voice. You stood behind the curtains and waited for your scene to come up. Till then, you were fascinated by Alcina's performance. She was excellent at acting and how she carried herself was something to behold, not that you would ever have the guts to tell her that yourself.
"Great! All right, everybody, we'll stop here for today!" Your drama teacher rose from her chair with a clap of her hands, gathering all her students around her. She was quite pleased with your satisfactory performances. "Good news, guys! I think your acting from Act I through III is solid. Tomorrow, I want us to repeat all Act IV and V because I still do not hear that absolute confidence from all of you. There's more potential to unlock, and I think you can reach that. You seem to be holding back a little. Am I mistaken?"
"No," a student admitted, timidly raising his hand. "I'm still trying to get into my character." That's precisely how you and others felt as well. There were so many lines to remember, and it felt like your brain was on fire.
"And that's just fine! Listen, I know you're all feeling nervous, and I can hear some of your voices trembling a bit. But don't worry, we have all next week to keep on practicing. We're so close, and you're all doing very well! I could not be more pleased with the dedication and passion demonstrated by each of you. Keep it up! Now go home and keep up with your studies. As I've said a hundred times, when you walk out of this auditorium, you leave your characters behind and you put your mind on other things. Drink lots of water, go for a walk, give your dogs a hug, pet some grass–er, something. Allow yourself a break and come back renewed because I promise all of you that your lines will flow much smoother than you think. Again, the purpose of this class is to broaden your imagination, strengthen your communication skills, function effectively as a team, build your confidence and, above all, have fun! The goal is not to overwhelm you. You'll keep learning how to work under pressure together, OK? Remember, it's nothing to be intimidated by. It's just an asset to help you better cope with stress and knowing how to remain poised. So, are we all on the same page here?"
With all your nods to her, you smiled at your teacher. Ms. Parker was one of your favorites for a reason: she was very down-to-earth, understanding and genuinely exuberant when she interacted with all of her students.
"Excellent! Class dismissed. I'll see you all tomorrow!"
As you packed up your stuff and prepared to go with the rest of the student body, someone snuck up behind you. "Hero!" They wrapped their arms around your waist, lifting you up while squeezing the life out of you.
"Hey, Donna! Quit that!" You escaped your bestie's strong hold and pushed her back.
"No, no, it's Beatrice, remember?"
"How could I forget? We've been on that stage for weeks. Can thee forgive 'Hero' for her faulty memory?"
Playfulness glittered in her eyes as she adopted a lordly persona. "I suppose in my benevolence, I can overlook your transgression."
"You're such a goofball, you know that? But you're my lovable goofball."
"Aw, what sweet words from you, my Romeo! Be still, my beating heart!"
You blushed faintly and looked around to see if anyone was witnessing this silliness. "Oh, stop, you're making me feel stupid."
She stooped down and took your backpack, tossing it at you. "That's why you're lucky to be stuck with me. Now let's go, I'm starved, and my mouth is hella dry from all my lines. I swear, at this point, I'm just barfing it all out because I'm so tired from memorizing them. I feel like I'm drowning in Shakespearian language, like how on earth could these people talk like that? It's exhausting!"
