Out in the field, Daniela conversed with the landlord about her purposes for the business and how she planned to expand it. Her uncle had expressed a recent interest in buying the land from her. But since you and her were the only ones wishing to hold on to the vineyard, she would have to tell him no for now.
Daniela couldn't let the vineyard go, not when it reminded her of her mother. She had to preserve the memories of her. She just had to. Her older sisters wanted no part in the business, which she understood. Their dreams had taken them elsewhere.
Cassandra had headed to the city, becoming a freelancer. Eventually, after she grew weary of functioning on a per-task basis, she set up a ceramic shop and found a more permanent residence that pleased her. Bela pursued an education and became an entrepreneur. For her, it was a good fit because she spent over half her time traveling; thus gaining fresh perspectives and broadening her knowledge. Although the sisters were far apart, their bond was just as strong as ever. They maintained regular correspondence, called, and made the effort to visit one another as many times as they could throughout the years. Daniela was most excited about having them stay with you and her during the summer. It had been too long since she hugged her sisters.
"Dani! They're here!"
Hearing your faraway voice announce their arrival, she concluded her business with the landlord, shook his hand, and hurried back to the manor house. They must've come in through the back door. When she came inside, she found her sisters chatting with you in the kitchen as you busied yourself with stirring the pot of vegetable stew.
Her soul was cheered upon seeing them. "Guys!"
Cassandra turned around and set her bag down, rushing to greet Daniela with a bear hug. "My girl! Have you gotten taller?"
"I wish! You've cut your hair!" Her brunette hair was at her ear length. It flattered her quite well in Daniela's estimation. "Goodness! You look like a new person!"
"Hey, where's my hug and lovely compliment?" Bela asked teasingly, tapping her on the back for her attention. "Cass is right, you have grown...somehow."
You grinned and waved your wooden spoon around. "I make her eat all of her vegetables. There's the secret."
Daniela rolled her eyes at you. "Mama, that's gotta be the most universally known secret on the planet!"
"And so original, too," Cassandra snorted. She then reached for her bag to fetch her presents for you and Daniela. "Close your eyes! Both of you! I bring gifts!"
Closing your eyes along with Daniela, Cassandra uncovered her crafts and yelled,"Behold! Your treasures!"
You pointed at the piece of art whose colors matched the sunset. "Ooh, is that a mug for me?"
Delight sparkled Daniela's eye. "That turtle shell dish must be mine!"
"It's not a turtle shell!" Cassandra defended, feeling somewhat insulted. "It's an earring bowl!"
"But it's shaped like a turtle shell..."
"Fine! Call it what you want. Name it even."
"I'm afraid I bear no gifts," Bela said. "But I am prepared to clean the wine cellar throughout this summer and share in the household chores. Maybe you two could use a break?"
You nodded at her gratefully. "That would be appreciated, Bela. Thank you, hon."
Cassandra screwed up her face into a frown. "Well, I'm not volunteering my whole vacation like that, but I'll help you with washing dishes and folding laundry. Maybe a little dusting here and there."
