Eyes

Suffering from the inability to move your body or utter a single word, the only thing you had control over was your breathing and eye movement.

Staring at the farthest and darkest corner of your bedroom, a pair of glowing, orange eyes kept blinking at you. They were closer to the ceiling than they were to the floor, which was more unnerving. This particular and unknown pair of eyes radiated something fierce. Sinister. There was no turning elsewhere from it. You were trapped right where you were.

Beside you, your wife slept soundly on her side, facing away from you. How desperate you were to wake her, even to flick her with your finger. You wished you could shake her from her sleep to point at the foreboding and intruding presence in your room.

These fiery eyes bore into you from afar, floating closer toward you. Terror stabbed your heart, making it harder for you to breathe. It then materialized into a shadowy figure that darted through the beams of moonlight shining through your window blinds. From what you could see, its hazy arms appeared like gnarled tree branches. Below its gangling waist, there were no legs. You only glimpsed its upper body and flashing eyes for a moment longer before it vanished.

But in a blink of an eye, its dimmed eyes were now brighter and closer to you, much to your personal dread. Still, Alcina remained at rest and dreamed while you were stuck with this encroaching presence. You didn't think it was possible for your body to get any colder than it already was. It was the worst feeling to be so helpless and paralyzed. If you could move, you'd turn on the lamp by your side and have it stay on all night long until the sun rose.

To your dismay, the eyes disappeared once more, and that was when you felt a pressure sitting on your chest. Like someone's weight was crushing you with no intention of removing itself anytime soon. You struggled to breathe, wheezing and hearing the increasing pounding of your heartbeat in your ears.

The eyes reappeared and were growing larger, surpassing the size of a human's. They were widening in a vertical direction, and the orange color was turning redder. All of you wanted to scream, yet not even your lips twitched. You focused on your breathing and screwed your eyelids shut, refusing to look at this horror any longer.

This didn't help you because as soon as you did, you heard a menacing growl near your ear. What a relief it would have been had it been your wife snoring instead. You forced yourself to open your eyes to face the dark figure, becoming numbed by its hypnotic gaze.

You then heard one of your daughter's feet patter down the hallway past your bedroom. Likely Cassandra or Bela heading to the bathroom. If only one of them caught sight of this monster looming above you...if it were Cassandra, she'd charge in and swing her bat at it. If it were Bela, she would logically turn on the lights and awaken her mother before rushing to your side to check on you. If it were Daniela, she'd shriek and then angrily curse at the demon to leave.

Your brave girls would banish the monster, as would your wife. But none of them could save you from this. You were on your own, and it was terrifying.

As its crimson eyes drew closer to your face, your fingers wiggled a bit. That was something. You set your focus on wiggling them more and more. Gaining more motion and control over your body, your hands trembled. Their strength was returning to you. As soon as you had your full mobility back, you were going to swing your fists at this threat until those awful eyes were no more. Then, you planned to trap your wife in a tight hug and not let her go until the morning.

You were so close. Slowly, your fingers curled into a fist and your throat tightened as the figure revealed its hideous smile. Its abnormally large and white teeth were faintly visible, and its lips were stretching further apart.
