Every so often, Alcina glanced away from the page that you were reading aloud. She kept hearing her daughters' breathing and their stifled giggles. These sounds prompted her to shake her head softly. Her children were ever so nosy, but they couldn't be blamed. It wasn't easy to entertain three teenage girls living under a curse that prevented them from experiencing life outside the castle. Despite the awkwardness, Alcina had no plans of revealing their presence to you. She wasn't one to deprive her offspring of their enjoyment.
Nearby, a book fell off a shelf, causing you to pause mid-sentence. "What was that?" You looked around the library, trying to identify the source of the sound.
"A book fell. It happens sometimes." The countess moved her hand to your knee, patting it. "Please, continue. Don't keep me in suspense."
"In suspense? They're just walking through a pasture together."
"Yes. We wouldn't want anything bad to happen to them."
You twisted your neck around, looking up at her, confused. "Bad? What do you mean? Have you read this book already?"
She smiled down at you. "No. I am reading it for the first time with you."
"Hm." You had your doubts about that, but you kept them to yourself. "Can we take a break? I need to refill my water glass from all this reading."
"Are you getting sleepy?"
You covered your yawn with your hand. "Well, yes. But I want us to finish this current chapter before I go to bed. I have to know if they kiss! The sexual tension between them is palpable. I can actually feel it radiating off the pages."
She let out a chuckle. "Ah, that explains why my lap is feeling warmer."
You jumped off her lap after she said that. Hastily, you grabbed your empty glass and headed for the kitchen. "I'll be back soon. You better not peek at the next page while I'm away. We're getting closer to the end. They better do something more than just gaze into each other's eyes."
A playful smirk tugged at her lips. "I shall keep myself from peeking at the next page during your absence. You have my word, my lady."
As soon as you left, Alcina waited several moments before she called for her daughters. "Come out, my little flies. Daniela? I can hear your snorts."
Daniela, on all fours, crawled out from behind a row at lightning speed, which would've scared you to death had you stuck around. "Snorts? I beg your pardon? Those were my giggles!"
Cassandra emerged from the darkest corner of the library, lowering her hood. "It's okay, Dani. We adore your pig snorts."
Bela appeared by her mother's side instantly, reaching for the book. "I need to know what happens next! I bet they kiss!"
Alcina raised the book out of her reach. "This is not for your eyes, dearest. Besides, all of you have been listening to us read every night since chapter six. You will have to be patient."
"You know what's really adorable? The fact that you two stop and discuss every single chapter for, like, a whole twenty minutes before you move on to the next one," Bela pointed out. "We know you to be a fast reader. You are definitely taking your time finishing this book with her."
"So," Daniela said, standing up and dusting off her hands. "After you finish this novel with her, are you going to pick another one? Because I have a long list of novels I'd recommend!"
"When are you guys going to kiss?" Cassandra asked her mother. "She's been with us for weeks now. There's been no sign of her weird friend coming back, which is great news because then that means we'll get to keep her and Wilbur forever!"
