Scrambling up to the top of the boulder, her boots slipped on the slick surface of the rock. "Come on, Mom! Hurry up!"
"Just give me a second, Dani. I'm putting down your bag first. Why is this so heavy, anyway? Don't tell me you're collecting rocks again?"
"Necessities!" Daniela beamed. "Since it's raining, I packed a mini travel umbrella, a box of band-aids, a chip bag, five apples, a can of bug spray, and a pair of socks in case mine get wet. Oh, and a folded blanket. Y'all will be thanking me later for my amazing survival skills once we need them."
Cassandra raised her hand. "I call dibs on your blanket for when we become lost! It'll serve as a pillow for my head."
Alcina rolled her eyes, trying to pick a rock out of her shoe. "I doubt we'll become lost. Didn't you see all of those signs along the trail?"
"You never know," Bela commented. "I recently read about a family that disappeared during their hike and they haven't been found. It's been three weeks."
"A family, you say? Let me guess, they were all attacked by a grizzly? Some rando tried to take their stuff and ended up shooting them?" Cassandra guessed.
"Okay, that's enough of that," Alcina emphasized, adjusting her lens on her camera. "It's picture time."
"C'mon, c'mon, you can make it! Ten points for extra effort!" Daniela grabbed you by the arm and helped you the rest of the way. Where she was situated was on a smoother and flatter surface. For you or for anyone else, there was more of a slant, which was why you needed to hold on to your daughter to keep yourself from slipping off this boulder.
You laughed at how your ass was dampened. "I love wet pants."
"They'll dry!" Daniela giggled, wrapping an arm around your waist.
Posing with her, you smiled widely, providing Alcina the picturesque background of the forestry setting. Around you, squirrels chattered. Rain continued to fall from the sky. Its soft, harmonic sound drummed throughout nature while the branches creaked above you. The frozen smile on your face was beginning to weaken as you waited for your wife to take it. "We're ready!"
"Yes, yes," she muttered, fussing with the settings. "I'm almost there."
"Uh, Mother?" Cassandra slid up next to her. "You could just set it to Auto Mode and it'll do all the work for you."
Puzzled, she tilted the camera toward her and displayed the screen. "Isn't that what this is?"
"You've got it in the Night Portrait. Just let me–" Going to reach for it, her hand received a light slap.
"Don't do it for me. Just tell me how to do it."
With a sour look, Cassandra pointed at it with her finger. "It's literally just turning that little dial, like this—hey! Why you keep smacking my hand? I'm just pointing it out to you! Mom! Tell her I'm only trying to help."
"Alci? Hon? Let our techie help you."
Glaring at you, she refused to relent. "I know perfectly well how to operate this camera."
Losing interest, Daniela sighed and let her eyes wander elsewhere while they figured it out. Meanwhile, Bela was tickled from flicking a nut toward a chipmunk she had spotted under a log. Since your wife and daughter were going to take a few moments longer to work things out, you decided you wanted to jump down and grab your water bottle to quench your dry mouth.
Sliding off the rock should've been easy enough. Taking it slow, you pressed your front against the boulder and tried to climb down it. The problem you didn't anticipate was losing your grip on the slipperier slope and tumbling backward.
