Her fin covered in lustrous ganoid scales swished by you in a flash. She continued to twist her body and swim under, over, and around you in a fluid motion. The kingdom of light was approaching. The structure of her city differed vastly from your world. If any sailors were to hear of your exploration under the sea, you'd have to tell them it was a place of giant abalone shells, which was the closest you come to what you were seeing. No human vernacular could sufficiently delineate the beauty of this oceanic world.

"Are you tired?"

"Tired?" It was strange how you could hear yourself underwater. Her magic or whatever she had breathed into your lungs had only made your voice sound deeper and slightly muffled. You kept kicking your legs, smiling at her. "No, not exactly. But I'm a much slower swimmer than, well, you."

"I would think so." Grinning, she flipped her tail and spun herself toward you, performing a head dive before coming up near your face. She offered out her hand. "Take hold of me, and I will take you the rest of the way."

When you glanced down at your feet, you caught sight of something yellow. "Is that a sea lily? Can we go down there first and see it?"

Alcina was surprised by your request. Again, she would have assumed that you would have liked to see where they stored gems and other precious metals. "The aquatic plant?"

You nodded happily.

"Very well, if that pleases you." You were something of an oddity to her. A woman who would risk her life to sail alone on a humble boat in search of her. She wouldn't lie to herself. That siren would've dragged you under had she not arrived in time. Had the creature killed you, she would've lost her chance to be with you. As long as you were here with her, she'd guard you with her life until it was time for you to return to your world. If only you could be a part of hers instead, then she'd get to keep you as her treasure.

Getting closer to the flower, the top of the plant brushed against your fingers. It then crossed your mind what the Black Sea held, like treasures lost at sea from ancient civilizations, sunken vessels, shells, marine creatures. Monsters.

"You don't have any sea monsters down here, do you? Like the Kraken?"

She cracked a sly smile at you. "Even if the Kracken were real, it is said that it resides off the coasts of Norway. We will be safe. Although that smooth hammerhead shark swimming over there has its eyes on you."

"What?! Where?" Panicked, you gave a few pathetic kicks before clinging to her, causing her to laugh heartily. If you were going to get this close to her body, then she'd make up anything.

"I was only teasing you. Besides, hammerheads actively seek out smaller fish and crustaceans. They will not attack a human unless they are provoked."

Letting go of her arm, you narrowed your eyes at her. "You tease! I don't want to be swallowed whole by some sea creature."

"I won't let allow that to happen to you. I protected you from that siren, did I not?"

You shuddered at the memory of how much of a help you had been. "You did. I didn't do anything..."

"Nonsense, you fought it off." She saw no reason why you'd still feel guilty about that. Although she wasn't too fond of being bonked on the head by your oar, she believed you to be rather brave considering the tense circumstances of that night. "Now, are you ready to go, or would you like to spend more time with the shrub?"

With a nod and crooked grin, you took her arm again. Even if she had assured that you were safe with her, that still didn't completely allay your fears about being eaten by something.
