Facing the Unknown

Upon your arrival, you clocked in and put on your apron to prepare for yet another mundane day of customers wanting their stomachs filled. You placed your things inside your locker and shut its door. A moment later, Lesha, the restaurant's manager, came in and opened hers beside you.

She flashed you a bright smile. "Hey, mojii! I see you're here a little early today?"

You gave her a lopsided grin "Why do you keep calling me that? And it's emoji, not 'mojii'."

"Because your face," Lesha quickly pulled out her phone and showed you her chat bubble, "looks just like this little guy right here? The yellow smiley with the big bug eyes."

"Whatever you say, Lesha."

"So, how them wild daughters of yours doing?"

"You know how it is. They're busy with schoolwork, caught up in typical drama from time to time–sassy..."

"Of course." Lesha sympathized, nodding her head. "Wouldn't I know? I've got four of 'em myself. You tell those girls that if they ever need a summer job, this place will always have one for them."

Offering her a genuine and thankful smile, you responded, "I will. Thanks for that offer." Lesha may have only been a few years older than you, but she felt more like a mother to you.

"And how's that tall wife of yours? Alma, is it?"

"It's Alcina," you corrected her for what seemed like the hundredth time. "You've known me for how long? Nearly two years and you still get my wife's name wrong."

She shrugged her shoulders at you. "Well, honey, I run a restaurant and see hundreds of faces a day, and each face has a name. I can't be expected to remember all of them."

"But you don't even have to learn all of their names. Most just stay in their seats and order their food, and only some will introduce themselves."

"Then I have trouble remembering my kids' names," she retorted. "Now get yo' ass out there. Those customers won't find themselves a place to sit."

Leaving the room, you set about your day, seating people, taking orders, serving, and scurrying around like a Carpenter ant. It certainly made time fly. Before you knew it, you were nearly halfway through your shift when Bela found you. You wiped your hands on your apron as she approached you.

"Mom!" Bela had a bounce in her step before she gave you a quick hug. "I just came by to give this to you." She then handed you your phone. "You left it at the house."

"Oh, there it is! I knew something was missing from my locker. Thanks, Bela. So, are you guys headed home?"

"Yeah. Cass is waiting outside in the car with Dani. We just thought we'd swing by. You almost done?"

You let out a long sigh. "I wish. I'll be home around 8 tonight, okay? Lesha asked me to stay an extra hour."

"Oh, all right. Well, we'll see you soon!" She gave you another hug before leaving.

Stuffing your phone inside your apron pocket, you continued on into the evening. The only unfortunate accident you had was tipping your food tray over a little too far and having someone's soda slosh down your arms and into your pocket, wetting your phone. You cursed under your breath as you pulled it out and wiped it off. There was another large group waiting for someone to seat them. Finding yourself in a slight quandary, you set your phone on an unoccupied table.
