Wounded

Terrified, you crouched down inside a hollow tree with your back pressed up against the interior of the trunk. You stayed very still while you listened to the cries of Cassandra and Daniela fighting off the horrendous creatures.

In the darkness of the night, you could make out the shadowy figure of Daniela as she angrily swung her sickle at the offenders. The reflection of her blade glistened in the moonlight. Lycans. Growing up, you had read and heard about them. These social creatures typically traveled in packs, preying on birds, fish, livestock, and worst of all, humans. They were a fearsome nightmare to encounter.

You watched as Daniela's sickle made contact with a Lycan's head. Its body went limp and fell to the ground. Frantically searching for you, Daniela spotted you hiding in the tree's large cavity. "Are you okay?" The Lycan's blood was splattered on her face.

"Where is Cassandra?" You shifted your gaze from her and scanned the area. "We have to help her!"

Beginning to squeeze out of the man-sized tree hole, Daniela halted you with her hand. "She chased after one of the Lycans, but I saw another one tailing her. I have to find her and make sure she's okay. You need to stay here. I can't have you follow me or else you'll get hurt, or worse." She grimaced as she finished that last part. "Once I get her, we'll come and get you, then we must get back home to Mother and Bela." Daniela spun on her heel and started running in the direction of where she last saw her sister. "Don't move and leave that tree!"

She vanished from your sight.

You felt completely useless. The idea of just waiting in the tree until they came to fetch you was beyond frustrating. Tempted, you almost decided to follow Daniela to help her find Cassandra, but your logic reminded you that you'd only get in the way, endangering all of you even more.

You cast your mind back to how this all started: Cassandra and Daniela wanted to try a new recipe that called for more pig meat. They wished to venture deeper into the forest to track down and carve their own pig rather than buy its meat from the market. It took some convincing on their part, but Lady Dimitrescu finally caved in to their request and allowed them to go. They asked if you could go with them, which you didn't mind. You remembered how your Mistress hesitated. She initially wasn't comfortable with the idea of you going along with them; however, she knew her daughters would do anything to protect you, and she needed to be more confident in that fact.

At dusk, all of you exited the castle's grounds and headed into the area of the woods where the girls claimed their 'perfect specimen' would be. Farther in, the daughters walked side-by-side, chattering about who'd capture the boar and have the honor of carving it. Abruptly, Cassandra stopped, shushing Daniela with her index finger. She sniffed the air and glanced behind to look at you. Her eyes widened in shock. You were being hunted by Lycans.

Four of the creatures emerged from the trees and charged toward you. You barely had any time to react before Daniela pulled you roughly by the arm and dragged you over to a hollow tree, ordering you to hide in it. Daniela then joined Cassandra, hissing at the monsters and drawing their sickles.

A rustling of leaves brought your mind back to your present and precarious situation. You heard someone breathing nearby. Peeking your head out, you listened closely. The crackling sound of the leaves ceased. Cautiously and quietly, you placed your foot out of the tree, your other following it.

The leaves crunched with each step you took. As you were about to call out for one of the girls, a body slammed into you, knocking you off your feet as you felt yourself fly through the air and then hit the ground. You gaped in horror at what had hit you with such incredible force: the remaining Lycan that didn't tail Cassandra.
