Her Priority

Holding a warm container in your hand, you were in the process of recalling when you last sat down and had a nice dinner with your wife. Being newlyweds, the first few months were marked with much laughter, dates, intimacy, and trips every other weekend. But lately, her presence at home was more of a rarity. As always, there was yet another "problem" at work that required her attention, or she was on the verge of solving whatever case she was investigating.

Whatever her reason was, it'd leave you staring at a wall while you ate your meal each evening in total silence. Afterward, you'd curl up on the couch with your blanket and pillow, wishing she could be there to cuddle you whenever you laughed or jumped at a scene on the TV screen. During many instances, you'd even doze off and hope to be woken up by her, yet that was seldom.

After several months had passed, you eventually gave up on asking Alcina how long she'd be at her office. It was reaching the point where you knew when to expect her to be on her side of the bed, which was typically around midnight. Sometimes you'd be awake and talk to her for a short time. Other nights, you'd be fast asleep and only wake to find her spot vacant by the morning.

Gripping the container, you halted and stared at her office. The least you could do to support your lover was to bring her a hot meal. Whenever she let you know she couldn't make it home for dinner, you'd get in your car and head her way. At first, it was once or twice a week that you'd do this, and then that turned into three to five times a week. And now it was not only the weekdays, but the weekends as well.

This would lead to arguments with her, and as much as you hated having any type of contention with Alcina, this was getting to you. It stung whenever she'd cancel the plans you had already made together. Although you were proud of her, you admitted to yourself that it wasn't easy being married to a detective. You knew there were seasons when she'd become obsessed with her workload and no amount of persuasion would keep her from it, or even convince her to take a break. Your wife was simply too stubborn for her own good.

But tonight, you were set on changing her mind.

Turning the door handle to her office, you gave your usual light knock before stepping inside. Too focused on her papers, Alcina didn't hear you come in until you cleared your throat. As soon as she glanced up at you, her mood lightened. "Hey, you!"

You smiled brightly at her. "Hey, you! I've brought you something special tonight. Your favorite vegetable dish with those stuffed peppers you like. You wouldn't believe it, but I bought the last red peppers that were at the store. There was this gentleman in front of me who was grabbing all of them and putting them in his cart. I was worried he'd take all of them. As it turned out, he ended up leaving me a few. Oh, and I got a fork and a napkin for you right here."

She gave you a nod of appreciation. "How lucky I am to have the world's most talented chef. Thank you, dear. You can set it down on my desk."

"Right." You placed the container of food near her lamp. Your wife then resumed her task of reading through her gathered evidence so far. "How's your case coming along? Are you getting any closer to figuring out who's responsible for that woman's disappearance?"

Without looking up at you, Alcina tapped her lip with her index finger as her mind attempted to piece together her most recent clues. "Closer, yes. This weekend, I may need to leave town to track down her birth mother again because I believe she's withholding some crucial information from us. Something isn't right. She's too defensive."

"This weekend?" You couldn't keep the disappointment from creeping into your tone. "Uh, you and I were going to head out of town, remember? I actually have been packing our stuff and getting it all prepped. I got your clothes in your bag already. But I guess we don't even have to go anywhere in particular. We could just decide to stay here in town and do something else?" You didn't care whether Alcina wanted to drive to the lake or not, you only wished to spend quality time with her.
