What a terrible start to Monday. Donna didn't have any patience. She didn't care if Alcina was too busy, for she had the most urgent news to tell her. Bursting into her office, she marched over to her desk. "Alcina!"
She half acknowledged her presence. "Donna, what do you need?"
"Look at this!" She threw a letter down onto her desk, forcing Alcina to look up from her computer screen.
Her eyebrows furrowed. "What's that?"
"It's a resignation letter from Y/N!" Donna cried. You had come in during the earlier part of the morning to drop it off at her front desk. Donna had asked you what it was, but you dodged her question, telling her you had to be somewhere else. You left before your friend could ask you anything more. Being her nosy-self, she opened your letter. When she realized what you were doing, she became distraught. She loved working with you. "She's quitting and leaving us! Why? I thought you two liked each other. I was, like, shipping the both of you in my head, and now my fantasy is totally ruined!"
It was like a blade had shredded Alcina's insides. Not only had she driven you away from her, but she had eliminated your job security as well. "I didn't expect this reaction."
"Reaction? Wait! Back up, what did I miss?" Donna demanded. She had worked for Alcina long enough to treat her more like an older sister than a boss. "What do you mean by that? Do you know why she quit?"
"I'm rather busy at the moment," Alcina claimed. "I don't have time to discuss this with you."
"Well, that's a weak excuse." She moved around her desk to see what she was doing. Donna could always see right through her. "You're just deleting emails. You can't be that busy. And your afternoon schedule is open. You don't have any meetings until later. So..." She went back around to sit in the chair in front of her. "We've got some time to chit-chat. Please, tell me why she left? Didn't you and her have a good time on that business trip?"
"We did," Alcina said, choosing to remain as vague as possible if Donna was about to grill her like a detective.
Donna was hungry to hear more. "Okay, so? What happened? You had a good time, but that must not be the case, or else she wouldn't have resigned shortly after your trip. Tell me what really happened?"
Although their working relationship was complicated at times, Alcina trusted Donna with more intimate details about her personal life compared to her other employees. Well, except for you. She would have shared her entire company and life with you. "Everything was fine. She helped me with my flight anxiety and then we landed. We stayed in a suite, then we went to the confer—."
"Hold on," Donna interrupted, her mouth turned up a fraction of an inch. "Did, uh, you two do anything particularly special that night?" She then shrunk under her smoldering gaze. "Sorry! I won't interrupt!"
"She took notes at the conference, as I had instructed. Afterwards, we had our lunch break. She suggested we grab hot dogs instead of choosing a more delectable dish."
"The suspense is killing me," Donna said, keeping her hands clasped together in between her legs. She was never one to tune out a good story.
"We returned to the conference. After it ended, I told her to call an Uber outside while I stayed behind to speak to a couple of individuals. Then I ran into Julia."
"Oh, my God! Julia Roberts?" Donna quipped. "Who knew she was a fan of these kinds of conventions?"
"Donna," Alcina growled, curling her fingers. "Take this seriously, or I will end this discussion."
"Got it." Donna zipped her lips.
"Julia was there. I had a feeling I'd run into her, yet I didn't expect her to approach me."
