I worked hard for this - I will continue to work harder but not just for my sake, for the people who wanted more for me. For the people, I will never see again.

This is for them.

To show them that they were right to believe in me - it was just too bad that back then I didn't believe in myself.

***     ***     ***

Early morning, not a lot of people going to be out on the streets because, at the start of the year, loads of people are either tuned in to watch the ceremony at the College or are going to try and be there in person to support their kids.

Mom won't be able to make it, and my sister still needs to go to school.

I step into the grocery store, and looking at the clock ticking down I notice that I have about twenty minutes to get there. I use my ability to flow through the air with little resistance, grab a can of energy drink, and then back to the cashier.

"Morning."

I return his greeting with a nod, "Morning."

"Busy day?"

"Going to be soon," I glance at the TV just above the till.

"You also attending?"

"That is the plan," I place down the bill and put down my change, I grab the change and rush outside.

Opening the can with one finger I down the entire drink, my chest burning from all the carbonated gas. I slam my chest and burp it all out before I use my ability to rush across the city from my neighbourhood to the arena.

My ability, I inherited it from my mother.

Some people say it is just smoke, others say it might just be shadows. Mom says it is a combination of both, that it is so much more than what people considered it to be. Right now I am just smoke and shadow gliding through the air.

Floating above the buildings I spot it in the distance. They call it a College but in reality, it could easily just be an Academy. They allocated a lot of dorms to be built for it, personal arenas, and lots of classes for the mass amounts of students flocking towards it.

Everything is built around it, built around the idea of being some kind of hero.

However this year, there is a cut-off.

Six hundred students and they only need 100 seats filled. Should be fighting four different fights at most - they only take the best of the best. I drop down at the front of the academy and slip past the crowds of kids standing around to reach the front.

"Hey-"

"Where are you touching!"

"Piss off!"

"Get away from me-"

"Man..."

"Did someone just take a fucking shit?"

These are all the words I hear as I zip past them all to the front, then being stopped by one of the campus security guards stretching his hand out front of me. I then reappear taking the spot at the front as I ask him.

I glance at him through the corner of my eye, he isn't paying any attention to me so it is a safe bet that he won't even acknowledge me.

I glance over my shoulder to see that quite a few characters are hovering around the front. Though I believe that all of us are here for our reasons, personally, I am here to prove to my past self that we could have been more.

Because there always has to be more.

Then I heard a loud voice over an intercom, "Students, you were all delivered specific cards that are blank," I pulled the card in question out of my pocket, "This will have a number with three alphabetical symbols. This will indicate firstly the arena, and which squares you will be fighting in. If you aren't in your square within the half hour you will be disqualified."
