I wonder how bad it can get. I am standing in front of the virtual listings and there are a lot of listings for 5 to 6. Nothing ever reaches a rating higher than that and it is making me wonder if there is ever going to be a need for a 10 rating.
Are there people sitting at a 10 rating?
Would kind of be nice to just see who has what rating but then again that would just mean they can bully you out of the way. I then scroll through it as I notice that there is a cancelled job listing that has been pulled out since this morning.
A fucking 8-star difficulty job? Huh.
All details about it have been redacted which makes me wonder what and who needs to be gone after with such a high star rating. I walk away from it and head for the entrance the day is pretty much over with and I can probably go and find Eve.
On my way out I see Kat talking to someone with a nowhere-near-happy expression. It looks almost like she got dragged into a conversation. She locks eyes with me for a brief moment and it just feels like she is asking for help.
Time to not mind my own business.
I tuck my hands in my pockets as I walk towards them. "Hey, Kat. Sorry for keeping you waiting."
She shakes her head, "Hey no worries."
The guy looks at me over his shoulder, she then away siding next to me grabbing me by the arm and pulling both of us back to the entrance. I hold my narrowed gaze as if to warn this guy off from trying anything.
Even though there exists a chance where he can rock my shit.
She whispers to me, "Thanks, I accidentally bumped into him on my way out. And I was rambling and couldn't find a way out of the conversation so he probably got mistaken for something else and I am still rambling right now trying to convince you that it was my fault.""
"You'll survive," I chuckle.
She then lets go of my arm after we reach the front door. "I saw that you got into a fight on the second day. Though you don't need to get in trouble for my sake, I heard that anybody who has been here for longer than two years is very strong."
I lift my shoulders, "I just have a low tolerance for jackasses but besides you looked at me and pretty much begged me to come to save you."
"I didn't," she protests with a furrowed brow. "That was more a look off... okay a little bit but that is only because I did fuck up a little bit."
"It was in your eyes."
"It was just getting annoying because I am a dunce," she cocks her head, "But thanks for helping me out."
"Don't mention it," I feel my phone buzz but I don't answer it for now. "Though I am going to need you to watch where you are going because if that happens a second time round I am just going to assume you are out to get me."
"Maybe I just like being saved~"
"I'll get tired of playing the hero."
"The praise isn't enough for you?" I look at her as she arches her eyebrow at me.
"It's not about the praise," I chuckle. "But it sure helps a little bit. Right now I am just trying to keep my head tucked between my shoulders before I end up being the most hated student in this school."
"I think you are cool."
"I think I am cool too."
"Glad you think so because I doubt everyone will end up hating you unless you do something that deserves to be hated, so far I don't think you are nearly as bad as half of the people I've met so far."
I chuckle, "That's probably because we didn't get on each other's bad side."
"Also true."
I glance at her as I ask, "Vastaya aren't as common as they used to be, right?"
She snorts, "Came out of nowhere but yeah. There have been a lot of problems with Vastaya and Human relations so a lot of us just keep to ourselves. I imagine we will see a few Vastaya here but some of them are very good at hiding."
"Racism must do it."
She lifts her shoulders, "It is... yeah actually I think it is more a fear of being oppressed or offended than needless attention but not everyone is a fan of us."
There is a Vastayan movement where they are fighting against the government trying to get them into society. Maybe I just don't understand it fully but I know that there are large groups of Vastaya acting as terrorists.
Then there are the few Vastaya that live among the humans but it doesn't look like anybody cares. But how am I supposed to know that? I am human.
She then chuckles, "But it sometimes helps. A lot of people think the whole ears and the tail thing is cute and I think that's pretty funny with a human's fascination with it."
I chuckle, "Meaning to say you like the attention."
"I think everyone likes some form of attention."
"Touché," she flashes me a wide grin.
"What do you think of them?" she asks while moving her ears as if to show them off.
This is a trick question. I am just trying to figure out what the catch is... I don't know if she just wants the compliments or if this is a judge of character and whether or not I like fluffy things.
"I think they suit you."
She snorts, "I kinda don't have a choice on that one but thank you so I will just take the answer as a yes, you do like them," wearing an smug expression.
"Let's go with that, yeah," I then gesture with my thumb, "I will be abandoning you just as quickly as I found you because I got plans to meet up with someone."
She tilts her head. "You... are dating someone? Already?"
I chuckle, "Isn't like that. I got claimed by one of the students here seeing that they love doing that to the new guys."
"The Freshie experience," she then waves at me as she leaves. "Enjoy the rest of your night then-"
I stopped her, "Ask Rey to create a group chat for us because she has everyone's number and she has this thing where she likes ignoring me."
"I will!" she calls out as she leaves.
I pull out my phone to see a message from Mom.
I talked to the headmaster and I am just currently busy with a very important case and should be able to train you by next week.
I then twist my lips to the side, I recall her having one case that she has been struggling with but I can't remember what she called it.
Are you still busy with that one?
Before I get a chance to put it away she answers instantly.
Unfortunately. Enjoy your night.
You too, sleep tight.
Not a moment later a group chat is made with Rey already complaining about how she has to do everything for everyone like she needs to be the mom of the group - it is what she gets for dumping all of the other responsibilities on my shoulders.
Though I am worried about Mom - she never talks about work and it is even harder to learn anything from it. I know she is a detective but it comes along with a question I once asked her and she didn't answer me at all.
Not even deflecting, didn't even change the topic.
Why did she choose a job as a detective? And not someone who does the same with a lot more recognition and pay from the government? Maybe she doesn't care for the attention.
She could easily have said that it was her dream job...
