*** Kiriko (Mom) POV ***
"Detective," they stop by my desk in a hurry, "Captain wants you to check out a hostage situation down at the abandoned district. We think it is a strong lead to the Virtuoso case."
I push myself out of my chair, "Thought we handed that over to the government? Or did they realise that sending children after him would be a terrible idea?"
"We did but if we can get that sick fuck before anyone else even crosses paths with him we can save hundreds of lives." I then grab the file in his hand as he walks me to my car. "There is already a patrol force at the scene."
"Call them off."
He stops in place, "What why-"
"Otherwise they will die, call them off right now."
I rush down the stairs and head straight for my car not wasting any time because this has been my case for how long now? Yet every single trail goes cold or ends up with a close encounter with him.
Khada Jhin.
The dispatcher gave me the street name and it took about ten minutes to reach the venue.
The patrol cars are still here despite my insistence that they should have been called off - I pull out a cigarette and let the smoke fill my lungs before blowing it out. I climb out of the vehicle to be approached by two officers.
"Detective."
I glance around, "Situation?"
"Three people just ran out of the front of the theatre and bled out and the other one is in the back seat whimpering." I search their faces to see that they look frightened. I walk up the steps towards the two corpses.
Recent deaths and the bullet wounds don't make any sense which means he has to be in there. What do I do? Call for backup then he disappears like a phantom for another week? Or do I just go in there and face him? Or is it another trap?
I walk back down towards the survivor who is shaking, he is wearing rags and looks almost homeless. He is mumbling to himself incoherently it isn't anything that makes sense and must have been tortured.
I then lower myself, muttering a phrase that I know all too well, "The stage is set."
His mumblings stop, and he lifts his gaze looking at me with a crazed expression. Wide bloodshot eyes, his skin is pale and he reeks of sweat. Blowing my smoke through the corner of my mouth I can tell something is wrong.
Not scared - but... insane? Indoctrinated? My eyes drop down the rags as I wonder if he is a walking bomb.
"I will bloom-"
I let a lance of shadow impale him where he sits. Creating a shadowy barrier it swallows a bright blue and red light before the explosion chips away at it. Revealing a blown-open corpse with skin and muscle twisted in his chest.
"What the-"
"Stay here," I look at both of them before walking up the stairs.
Two of them were set to die so that the third would look like a survivor only to be a martyr. I take a deep breath as I see shadows skitter across the walls towards the inside of the theatre to be my eyes.
I walk straight into it. Abandoned. The place is dusty and just run down with the seats caked in either dust or mould... I keep my eyes on the ground to see the same traps placed in ways to make sure you step on them.
A tune in the air, a music box? Right on top of the stage. It is incredibly soft and faint - on the stage, someone is sitting on their knees with something that looks like a cut out of a tree with white bark and red leaves.
Closer to the stage are more corpses and bodies placed in the few seats that don't look run down. I let a shadow of my person walk around the stage to see if there were any traps to trigger. From my shadow, I can see the aura reaching for everything as if trying to eat at anything, a ravenous power.
Seeing through its eyes I can tell there is nothing up there other than the person that is held, hostage.
No. This isn't a hostage situation, it is a trap.
I reach the stage as the music box gets louder and louder. It is small and resting near the knees of the boy attached to the tree. Unlike the other guy he is wearing what looks like traditional garments.
I spin around glancing around the theatre as I feel like I can hear someone hum the tune of the music box. I am not alone and I know that. Then another sound, deep laughter echoes through the quiet room as the music box finally stops.
Dead quiet.
Unnerving.
"You... killing you will be one of my finest works." I hear the same voice behind the mask.
A shot, I phase into shadows only for it to whirl past me followed by two more all perfectly aimed for my chest but I can easily dodge around them. Bullets infused with magic from a magical gun that can hurt me through my powers.
Then with a low chuckle. "Darling, your lack of fear is what drives me. Your death will make me complete!"
I lift my hand, taking a long long pull before tossing the cigarette aside. "I'll play your sick game," I clench my fist as I spot the mask hiding in the darkness with his weapon trained on me.
"Four-" the words travel through the air like a whisper.
A shot rips through my waist in my attempt to dodge it, it travels through me and into the boy's chest. I glance over my shoulder to see trails of blue and red energy travel around I lift myself only to feel my legs give in under me.
"F-fuck," I place my hand over my wound and the immediate area lights up.
I then feel myself teleporting as I pull myself out of the shadows just outside of the theatre. I drop down on the road as the theatre explodes right in front of me. Every single shadow that was under my control is dead - I had to take that risk and each time I learn more and more about you.
Khada Jhin.
The officers rush to me, "What-" Another explosion rippled through the air sending shards of wood towards us - I try to phase all three of us in a barrier only for one of the officers to be impaled by a long wooden shard.
"Ambulance," I feel blood trickle through my fingers. "Quickly..."
I groan as I lift myself to my feet as the rest of the building slowly burns down. I am one step closer to understanding you. I then create a Raven as I whisper to it, "Find him."
As it flies off it splits into a flock that all spread around the area to find him.
I glance down at the officer calling the ambulance right next to the officer that was next to him - I then feel a cold feeling down my spine as one of my Ravens fine him only for me to lose contact with it immediately after.
