(Inspired by Solo Leveling.)
At world's end and all that is left is the shadow swallowing it whole - but in my mind, I know... that it isn't my end. It is yours.
"You look lost," I hear someone call out as I walk past the rooms to find Kai'Sa.
I glance at the person sitting in the corner of one of the rooms branching outward. I turn to face her and she narrows her eyes at me, with a slight smile she relaxes backwards while watching me with a raised eyebrow.
"Being immortal has its perks."
She shrugs, "I'd be dead a couple hundred times. And what about you? How many times would you have been dead if it weren't for the fact that Troy sent you off into the deep end?"
I step closer to her as I express, "Don't misunderstand. I am well aware that I have only one person to thank for what I am right now. But never my growth, never what I achieved. I should have died in there but here I am."
"Amazing isn't it? Surviving death," she gestures to the seat beside her. "I'd ask to have a drink with you but there's nothing here to drink."
"What changed?"
"Fewer chains," she states. "Besides we both know that I never hated you, my aggression towards you was necessary for me to protect what I wanted to. Now I don't have to follow the orders of a scared old man."
I narrow my eyes, I sit down beside her, "Scared?"
She chuckles. "That grabbed your attention, didn't it?" She takes a deep breath almost to prepare herself to recite a book, "Azreal grabbed me and my brother a long time ago. Both of us are older than we care to admit. Juno mastered a branch of necromancy closer to what the Darkin were capable of wielding, though far more destructive in comparison but his sanity keeps it in check. Dark magics tend to cripple the mind."
I then ask her, "Are you corrupted?"
"Possibly. Azreal told me when I woke up from what felt like a long sleep that a Darkin took hold of my body and due to some fortune my soul swallowed his whole and took the place of the thing sealed within the sword," she cocks her head. "I didn't believe him, I thought it was a trick to deceive me into thinking I am not bound to a sword through some demonic contract, forced to obey him and his every order."
"But it was Juno this entire time," I state.
"That and Juno lost himself, whatever you see in him right now is like one-seventh of he was once upon a time. But maybe that is why he took a liking to you seeing as the two of you come from similar roots, but he lost more friends than he could afford. It got to him, cynicism took over and it drove him mad. And on the other hand, I was keeping an eye on him, doing the bidding of Azreal while he promised to bring Juno back. Juno is dead, nothing there to bring back, same goes for me. Death couldn't come any sooner but it appears that dying is harder when the body can't even be killed."
I hold my stare, observing her expression; nothing. The same face you'd expect to see on someone ready to move on from this world.
"You know that you are a once-in-a-lifetime circumstance." She locks eyes with me, "The world is one nudge away from a total fucking collapse. At least I know that I won't be alone to witness it."
I ask her, "Do you wish it all would end?"
"In due time," she glances at me. "Azreal and his cronies are scared shitless running away from the four powers. He said the world is in an imbalance. His darker counterparts are all dead and the four will come in force to kill them."
"They are being hunted by a force of nature then," I assume.
"More than likely." She continues, "First comes a plague, followed by war, those surviving will suffer from the famine... and finally death comes to claim them. A story but if gods are terrified of stories then I suppose they are more than just that."
I narrow my eyes at the thought, "Are these above the Nightmares?" I ask myself.
A tale of the four Horseman, the harbingers of the Apocalypse.
She exhales sharply with a chuckle, "I am not one for stories but that's all I have to help you. I imagine if you could find them and possibly negotiate them into working with you... maybe they can even stop the Nightmares for you."
I lift myself from my seat, "You've given me plenty to consider, thank you."
"To your health," she lifts a cigarette. "Because the gods know that what comes next will make or break you."
I step out of the room.
It is a lot to take in but I am sure it will all become relevant sometime soon. I don't imagine it being easy to convince a force of nature to aid me... if anything if I got in the way of something like that what's the chance that they set their sights on me in turn?
I step into the infirmary to see Ashe and Lauren working on some patients. Walking towards me is Kai'Sa who is dressed for the part.
She hugs me tightly without hesitation, "This should have been my reaction back then when I first saw you."
Holding her around her middle, "I was dead. Or at least you all thought I was."
"Still," she pulls away. "But enough regretting the past, have you talked to the girls?"
I nod. "Have. Worked my way all towards the back just to come and find you, it feels like everything is all starting to set in all at once. I am wondering if I'll ever have time to get down to doing what needs to be done. You know?"
"Feels like when the waves hit," she states. "But I feel a bit more hopeful," she presses her fingers against my chest, "because of you."
I grab her hand and interlace my fingers with hers, "It won't be just because of me."
"We'll be there for you till the very end."
Something catches my attention, a cold sweat breaks out through my body as it reacts at the very sight of it. I hold my stare for a brief moment, a blink and it is gone. My vision turns back to normal, revealing Ashe sat down to help one of the people who got injured.
"(Y/N)?"
I shake my head. "Seeing things. Sorry."
I know what I saw, I saw almost too clearly. A glimpse of something? I have no idea. But all that it showed me is that Ashe is probably much closer into becoming a Nightmare than I have initially suspected.

(Small spoilers down below, kinda, kinda not)
This has been keeping me from writing as quickly as I'd like. Been scrolling through the internet for hours and I can't find designs or anything suitable that would fit both Ashe and Nightmare evolution concept-wise.
So for now I only have the picture above and I would like to have something more, to be honest. I'll be throwing my eyes around to see if I might find something that suits my fancy but in the meantime, if you feel like you've seen art or something that would fit Ashe I'd appreciate it if you share so that I can continue with the story.
It does feel a bit harder because I wanted to keep the powers closer to you to keep the idea that she's bowering from you but I am more than happy to let her have her own thing and more.
