Lily decided she would propose December 31st. She wanted to be engaged to Lizzie and didn't want to wait for a new year to be promised to each other. 2021 would be the year they called each other their fiancee!
Hailee helped her pick out a fancy restaurant for dinner and plan out how the proposal was going to go. Lily tried to make a script of what she would say when she proposed but that didn't end up very well and she decided she would just wing it and speak from the heart. Hailee agreed to dogsit Pickle the entire day so Lily didn't have to worry about keeping him cooped up in the apartment.
It felt like it was good timing too because each day that passed seemed to agitate Lizzie. She was more moody and she cried more often. A lot of times, Lily would catch tears streaming down Lizzie's face while she cried silently even when they were sitting watching TV and there wasn't a sad scene at all. Other times, she would catch her crying in bed or in the shower. It was their time of the month so maybe she was a little bit more moody than her abnormal behavior the past two months.
So what better time to propose than now? If there was anything that would cheer Lizzie up, it would be a proposal because Lily couldn't think of anything better for herself. The love of her life finally becoming her fiancee! Then marriage and then Lizzie will be her wife.
Lily wondered if they could just skip the fiancee part and just be wives.
Shaking her head of the thought and wiping her grin from her face, she picks up her jacket and shoulders it on over her jumpsuit.
"Babe!" Lily calls, reclasping her watch and the bracelet Lizzie chose for her from the farmer's market. With no answer, Lily calls out again and wanders out to the living room.
Lizzie is sitting at the kitchen island with a cup of coffee in both her hands. She stares blankly down at it without having drank a sip since she made it.
"Babe, I'm taking you out," Lily says softly, coming to her side. She goes to wrap her arm around Lizzie's shoulders but Lizzie flinches as if Lily's touch would burn her. Lily pulls her arm back, but doesn't let it bother her. Nothing will set her back today. "I have an outfit picked out for you. We have brunch at the new Korean fusion place that just opened up."
"I don't want to," Lizzie says simply and turns her head away from Lily.
"We haven't eaten yet and I haven't bought any groceries to cook," Lily states and opens the apartment fridge for proof. It's empty only with a nearly empty carton of orange juice left.
"I'm not hungry," Lizzie says stubbornly.
But the universe loves her so much so at that moment, her stomach growls as loud as Pickle snores. And he's absurdly loud.
"Yeah, sure," Lily says sarcastically with a grin. She takes Lizzie's hand and pulls her towards the bedroom with some protest from the other woman. She pushes her inside and shuts the door, gripping the handle and pulling so Lizzie couldn't open it. "The outfit is on the bed. Get changed and then we're going to have some delicious food."
"I'm not going," Lizzie snaps. She tries to yank the door open but Lily is much stronger than her and prevents the door from opening it.
A few attempts later, the resistance on the door disappears and the other side of the door goes quiet. Lily waits a few minutes to make sure Lizzie wasn't trying something smart before letting go and opening the door with the smallest sliver. She peeks through and smiles seeing Lizzie dressed and is just slipping on the red coat over her shoulders.
