The following morning, I managed to make it to class. "Genesis I've missed you around here. Laughing at people hasn't been the same!" Mason dramatized as he wrapped his arm around my shoulders for a side hug.
"Hey Mason." I mumbled with a small smile. "You doing okay?"
"I'm okay, just getting over a cold." I lied.
He spoke to me quietly about what I'd missed but in all honesty I wasn't really paying him much attention. His voice seemed to fall on deaf ears when the door opened and Xavier walked in. "Wait it's his week?" I asked. Of course when I decide to come to class he's teaching.
"Yeah, he switched with Dr. Laney." Mason informed me. I wanted my seat to swallow me whole.
When class started he offered everyone his dashing smile and introduced himself. His eyes found the back of the room frequently as he did so. I was just praying that he didn't see me. I looked a mess. "Any questions before we get started?" He asked the class.
His bright smile made me frown. I pulled my hood over my head and slouched down in my seat. I wanted to make myself invisible. "You want to study later?" Mason whispered to me.
"I'll let you know after my other class."
He nodded and took notes on Xaviers lecture. As soon as the class was over I made my way out of the door.
I wanted nothing more than to go in my room and hide away. I forced myself to go to my next class and meet up with Mason later in the day. "You hungry? I got five guys." He smiled as he stepped into the lounge.
I sat in our usual spot still bundled up with my book bag on. "You read my mind." I replied. He passed me the brown paper bag with that same smile.
"I'm getting ready for my second exam for math so I might be bothering you a lot." He warned. "Don't worry about it. I get it."
"Which one is mine?" I asked as I looked in the bag. "The one with the two on it. Got everything you like."
"I could hug you." I mumbled happily. I hadn't eaten anything all day. I pulled my coat off so I could get comfortable and we ate before we got into our work.
He finished before me and started studying for his exam. "Do you have any exams coming up?"
"Yeah I've got two this week and two next week."
"Good luck. Although I doubt you'll need it, you're so smart." He mumbled. "Well thank you." I smiled. We ate in silence for a bit. It was comfortable though. I the sound of the tik toks I was watching and the crumpling of the paper bag were the only noises around us. As we finished up I stretched my arms and started gathering the trash.
"I've been meaning to ask, why did the Dean call me to his office and ask me a bunch of questions about my relationship with you?" He asked quietly. There was no one around but I guess he wanted to keep quiet in case there were people passing by.
"My roommates ex girlfriend lied and told the Dean that she thought Professor Nixon and I were engaging in an inappropriate relationship. I don't really know how or why they asked to speak to you. Maybe Professor Nixon told them he thought we were together." I shrugged.
"Well why would she say that about you?"
"Long story short, she just doesn't like me. But we recorded her talking about how she lied and made the whole thing up."
He nodded and I stood to dispose of our trash. "I'm gonna throw this out and wash my hands."
"Okay."
I took hold of both of our trash and made my way down the hallway. I tried to walk really fast because I know that I'll end up passing by Xaviers office. I'd rather not bump into him.
