I honestly regret thinking that his parents' visit would be quick.
Three hours passed and his parents were still here. I'm pretty sure Aria had even arrived a little while ago. At this point I just wanted to eat and head home. While I was up here I managed to start a new show and finish a book I had been reading.
I also found the time to really think about this pickle I'm in. Because this has to be a secret I have to hide in his room to avoid meeting his family. It wasn't ideal. It wasn't what I would've wanted. No, I would've wanted to go down there and talk to them. I want them to ask me a bunch of questions regarding our relationship and try to get to know me as his new girlfriend.
But when that thought crossed my mind I had to pull myself together quickly. I wasn't his girlfriend. I don't know what I am to him. The nature of our relationship is complicated. In reality this is just sex with a nice professional repertoire added to it. How could it be anything else when he can't even hold my hand in public?
Every time I yearned to join the laughter coming from downstairs, I had to remind myself of my place. This was something no one, not even his parents could know about. Sure I could've said that I was here helping him out early this morning if I were to join them. But that seemed futile. It's still holiday time.
I stood from my place on the bed and stepped into the hallway quietly. I approached the edge of the staircase and the sound of their voices reached my ears. I couldn't make out what they were saying clearly so I took the risk and decided to be nosey. I just wanted to get an idea of how much longer I'd have to wait up here.
I got to the middle of the staircase where I was still out of sight when the voices became clearer. "She never told me she'd gotten married." I heard his mom say. "Imagine my surprise. I mean she just...I just don't understand. I guess it's not for me to understand." Xavier responded.
"Yeah but I would get it if you did feel some type of way. I mean you wanted to marry that girl. Y'all almost had a kid together." Now that was Aria. "Aria does have a point you can tell us if you're upset we definitely would understand." His father added.
A long silence followed before Xavier voice was heard again. "I'm not upset; I just think it's weird."
"You're better than me cause I would've called her a bitch." Aria scoffed.
I quickly covered my mouth so I wouldn't laugh. "It's a miracle that you're even in a relationship." Their mother laughed. A smile settled onto my face and I started to stand straighter to go back upstairs. I shouldn't be eavesdropping, but I couldn't bring myself to stop being nosey.
"You know if you're feeling like your ready to get back out there, I can introduce you to someone." I heard his dad offer. I halted my movements so I could hear Xaviers response. "No thank you, the last time you did that the girl was borderline psychotic."
"Hey how was I supposed to know she'd put trackers in your car!?"
The family laughed at that and I shook my head. "Besides I'm kind of...seeing someone." Xavier said a little lower than how he was speaking before. "You are?!" Aria exclaimed.
"Oh my God! Who is she?!" Oh my God, he's talking about me!
"Don't worry about it. I'm just letting you all know I don't need any help in that department." They would never know he was talking about me but I couldn't help the feeling of being flattered by the fact that he was telling them he was currently, kind of, off the market.
"Is it serious?"
"Not necessarily." Xavier responded. And in comes the reality check. "How old is she? Where does she work? How'd you meet her?"
"Jeez mom. Relax. She's someone I met at the university. Really sweet woman." He admitted. "You're blushing!" His father exclaimed.
"Dad please."
"What?! I'm just saying. We'll leave you alone about it for now."
"How's your assistant? What's her name again?"
"Luna. She's good. Best assistant I've had by far." He admitted. "That's good. I'm dying to meet her."
"She's gorgeous." Aria fawned. "If she wasn't a student I swear I'd be getting you two together." Aria added.
"Oh stop it." Their father laughed. "I'm just saying."
"Yes, please stop. That's my student and assistant." Xavier reminded her. I rolled my eyes at that. That didn't stop him from trying to break my back last night.
"I mean that didn't stop you from flirting with the last one." His mom chimes in.
When the words reached my ears my eyebrows immediately furrowed. What did she mean by that? "I did not flirt with her." Xavier scoffed. "Nah it was more than just flirting." Aria laughed.
"Aria!"
"What?!"
A thousand things ran through my mind at once as I processed this information. What did she mean when she said more than flirting? "You know the old assistant kind of resembles Luna. Except Luna is prettier."
I returned to a standing position. I think it's time I really get upstairs. As I ascended the stairs, I tripped a little bit. I stopped all of my movement after my hand landed on the step. I didn't make a loud noise but I definitely heard Mr. Nixon asking what the sound was. I stayed incredibly still as Xavier explained it away.
When they started chatting again I went back into his room. I quickly texted him asking, "Is someone coming upstairs?"
I figured that if I pretended like I didn't know what the sound was he wouldn't even assume it was me. He didn't even respond. I sighed and fell back into bed for another thirty minutes.
The sound of the front door slamming shut had me on high alert. I sat up from my spot on the bed and stayed still so I could listen for any other sounds. My eyebrows raised for a second and I hesitantly opened the room door. I went down the hallway and peaked down the stairs. "Xavier?" I whispered.
I didn't hear anything for a second and then he appeared at the bottom of the steps. "They're gone you can come down now."
I let out a sigh of relief and descended the staircase. "I'm sorry love, I was really trying my hardest to convince them to leave sooner."
"It's okay. We didn't have anything planned for today anyway." I shrugged. "I did want to at least feed you."
"Don't worry about it I actually think I want to head home now. If you don't mind will you drop me off?" I queried. I'd been here all day doing absolutely nothing beneficial. It's time I go home.
"Woah, woah what's the rush?" He said with a slight bit of panic in his voice.
"I just...it's already three and I wanted to go shopping today to get prepared for the next semester." I told him.
"Oh...I get it. I can't keep you here forever. Will you at least let me get you something to eat before you go?"
I nodded with a smile.
