I looked around the room in attempt to find Xavier but I had no such luck. It has already been two hours and I'm ready to go. They had the auction and they even announced and introduced Liliana as the new assistant Dean. The event was pretty much over if you asked me.
"You sure you don't want anything to eat?" Masons asked. I only nodded without really looking at him. I'm sure he thinks I'm a horrible date. But my mind has been on anything but Mason.
I watched as people started to make their way out to the dance floor. Judging from the intro alone I could tell it was Something by The Weeknd. I watched as all the older people gathered and danced in pairs very off beat at that.
I was startled a little when Mason stood abruptly. "Dance with me." He smiled.
"Mason I don't really dance-"
He didn't take my answer and instead grasped my hands and pulled me towards me. I laughed as he pulled me towards the middle of the dance floor. We mimicked everyone else's slow dancing position. His hands went around my waist and mine went onto his shoulders. "See this isn't so bad." He teased.
"Don't say anything just yet. I'll probably step on your feet twenty times."
"I don't know you're doing pretty well." He replied as we swayed back and forth. "I mean what can I say. I've gotta show everyone else that rhythm is important."
"Oh please!"
"I'm serious look at them over there. He missed the best twenty times already." I whispered. "He also just stepped on her foot and her whole ankle rolled." He pointed out quietly. I held back my laughter and shook my head.
He continued to make jokes about what was happening around us and my stomach was starting to hurt from laughing. My eyes crinkled around the edges as yet another smile graced my face. "Alright come on I saw this one in movies let's see if I got it." He said.
I wanted to protest but I was laughing too much while he spun me around and we swayed to the beat. He didn't stand close to me which was the only saving grace of the move. As soon as I looked up my eyes connected with Xaviers. Deja vu. He did not look happy. He looked pissed actually.
He was standing beside Liliana and the Dean of students. They were both talking but Xavier was clearly not paying them any attention his eyes were directed to me. I quirked an eyebrow in his direction and watched as he sat his glass on the table beside him. I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't for him to come approaching us.
I didn't get to watch because Mason was spinning me back around. "See I told you it wouldn't be too bad."
"That's because you're crazy."
"Excuse me?"
Mason and I turned our attention towards the voice speaking to us. Of course it was Xavier. He looked even more irritated up close. "Mason you don't mind if I cut in? I just need to borrow her for a few minutes to meet someone." He said it with the kindest voice he could form but there was a certain bite behind it that sounded anything but friendly. Mason of course wasn't able to tell. "Yeah of course. I'm gonna go to the bathroom."
I nodded as he stepped aside and Xavier took his place. As soon as he walked away I gave Xavier my full attention. "What are you doing?" I asked as his hand found the small of my back. He pulled me closer with a respectable distance remaining. "What are you doing? That kid has his hands all over you." He scoffed quietly.
"I mean not really when you think about it. He actually does well to keep them from won-"
"Luna..."
"Are you jealous?" I smirked. He offered me a stern look that I couldn't help but laugh at.
I held back my laughter and shook my head. "Did you still want me to introduce you to Liliana?" He asked.
"If you can it would be nice. But no pressure."
He stopped dancing and gestured for me to start walking. His hand rested on the small of my back guiding me to their table. "Xavier you're back!" Thomas, the Dean of students exclaimed with a smile.
"Yes, sir. I wanted to grab my assistant so she could meet you all. There's nothing as important as networking at this stage of college right, Genesis?" He asked as he looked over at me.
I nodded with a smile and made my way around the table shaking everyone's hands. "What's your Major Genesis?" Liliana asked.
"Criminal Justice with a Psychology minor." I told her. The fact that she was Xaviers ex was like a non factor in this conversation right now. I don't very often get to speak to very successful black women who have gone down the path I plan to. She was so sweet answering all of my questions and she even offered to mentor me when the semester started back up.
I hadn't even realized how much time passed until Mason started calling me. I'd forgotten all about him.
"Thank you so much. It was so nice to speak to all of you. Can you give me your email address Dr. Jackson?" I requested. Liliana smiled and waved me off. "I'll give you my phone number. I hardly check my email sadly."
I laughed as she typed her phone number in. "Give me a call soon Genesis."
"I will thanks again! I've gotta find my date."
As I turned to walk away I gave Xavier the look to let him know I was ready. He just nodded subtly and turned to the group. As I walked away I heard him telling them he was calling it a night.
I quickly found Mason and explained to him where I was all that time. "I think I'm ready to call it. Is your friend here?" He asked.
"Yeah I bumped into her and she told me to find her when I'm ready."
"Cool and you're sure you're gonna be fine. I can stay until you find her and we all leave together."
"No, no it's okay. It's my roommate and best friend. I'm good I promise." I lied. "Okay. Well I'm gonna go. Come on with me so you can get your bag." I nodded and followed him out the doors. We walked to the car together in a comfortable silence.
"Thanks for coming with me. I know I wasn't really the most fun date."
"Are you kidding. I had plenty of fun." He chuckled. "You don't have to spare my feelings." I joked.
"I'm being for real. I did have fun. It's just...can I be honest with you?"
I nodded with curiosity blooming in my chest. "It just felt like you would've rather been with someone else. I understand I do. But it just confirms some suspicions of mine." He said. My eyes widened a little and I frowned. "What suspicions."
"You don't like me the way I like you." He shrugged. "That's okay though. Another one bites the dust. I'm just happy you like me enough to invite me to come with you."
He opened the back door and let me grab my bag. I did so tentatively. "Thank you again for coming with me. And let's hang out more often. You are really good company."
He nodded as he opened his arms for a hug. I reluctantly stepped into them and patted his back.
"If there's any other things you wanna bring me too just give me a call. This suit was five thousand dollars. I want to wear it until the seams burst." He joked.
I shook my head and playfully pushed him away. "Get home dork."
"Good night, Genesis."
"Good night, Mason."
