Xaviers POV
I think she enjoys seeing me sweat. I have no other reason why she would decide to continue dancing with that kid for a fourth song. Do her feet not hurt?!
"Xavier?!"
I dragged my attention from Luna and Marvin to the person calling my name. I knew who it was before I even turned around. Her voice beckoned me like a siren but the thought of having to see her face made me feel sick.
"I thought that was you! How are you?" She smiled up at me.
I know that it probably shouldn't have but her smile gave me deja vu. "I've been good, and you?" I replied politely.
I wanted to present myself cordially. I didn't want to talk to her any longer than I had to and I definitely did not want to give her any opportunity to bring up the past. Who knows how this night could end if she does. "I've been really good." She replied as she unconsciously raised her left hand and moved her hair off her shoulders.
I immediately caught the diamond ring that shined against her dark brown skin. She got Married?! To someone very rich judging by the size of that diamond. "I didn't expect to see you here. You've never been one for these kind of things."
"Yeah I'm not really the same person I used to be."
"I see that."
"What made you chose Cornell?" I asked her out of sheer curiosity. "My mom was supposed to get the job before she passed, so I thought it would be a good way to honor her."
I had heard about her mothers untimely demise only a few months ago. I even reached out to her with my condolences. No matter how much I've grown to despise Lilly, I felt like it was the least I could do. Especially considering how good to everyone her mother was. My parents attended the funeral but I didn't feel it to be my place to go with them. "There you are, Lilly!"
I pulled my eyes from her to the tall man with Honey colored skin and curly hair approaching us. He slid his arm around her waist and pulled her to his side all while smiling at me. A genuine smile at that. "Um Xavier this is my husband. Noah this Xavier. An old friend from college."
"Oh it's nice to meet you man!"
It was so hard for to return his smile and even harder to shake his hand. "Nice to meet you too. How long have you two been married?" I questioned.
I could feel my ears starting to burn. We had only been broken up for two years. One of the reasons we broke up is because she wasn't ready to take the next step in our relationship and yet here she was...married.
"We've been married for 8 months now and together for a year and 9 months." Noah smiled happily as he looked over at her. He looked so madly in love with her. I remember I used to look like that. Now when I look at her I feel nothing but distain and anger.
It shouldn't have but the revelation soured my mood. She'd started dating so shortly after our relationship ended and it's not like it was an easy breakup. Maybe it just wasn't easy for me. Although I was sure that I was over her, I couldn't help but think about how quickly she moved on. It just further reminded me that she mentally checked out of our relationship long before we broke up.
"Hmm that's...lovely."
"Are you here alone?" She asked. "My assistant is around here somewhere." I replied.
"Oh how nice. We were just talking with Thomas and Gemma you should join us." She offered.
"Oh yes! They were just telling me about Lilly in her college days."
