Joe went up to the room after he hung up with Jordan. He laid down beside Steph; she scooted over and placed her head on his chest. He held her to let her know he was there.
"I'm scared, Joe. I'm scared to leave you and my kids. Why is this happening to us?"
"I'm scared too, Steph. We don't want you to leave, I need you. I am man enough to say that, I need you here with me. I don't know why this is happening, sweetheart. I know I keep saying we are going to fight this, but really I can't fight it. I can only be by your side while you fight it. Please, baby, fight this for me and the kids."
"My odds aren't looking good; that scares the hell out of me. Did you call Jordan?"
"Yes, I did, and I told him. He started crying and said to tell you he will see you when we return."
"Baby, I know he's not my husband you are, but I think he needs to be included in these discussions because he is the father of two of my kids."
"I think you are right, he should be included. He may not be your husband. Thankfully, I hold that title, but as you said, he is the father of Stefan and Michelle. I also think Marlene and Jon should be there."
"Yes, that title will remain yours until my very last breath on earth, whether it be now or thirty years from now. We have to talk to Griff and Kira. I just don't know how to break it to them."
"Thirty-three years from now, remember I said eighty-five. Yes, we do, and we will, baby. I don't think either of us is in the right mindset to do that yet. We are both still trying to get our heads wrapped around the diagnosis." He kissed the top of her head.
They spent the weekend just lounging around. She and Joe sat on the lounger on the patio, looking at the ocean. Joe was holding her as much as he could. Stefan and Michelle had both called her several times.
She watched their kids play on the beach with some kids that lived a couple of houses down from them. They just stayed cuddled up, Joe rarely let her out of his sight. He had already booked their flights back to Boston Tuesday. Michelle and Stefan were going to go shopping for groceries and open the house back up and let it air out.
Monday, they both got ready; she followed all the instructions before the scan. She was nervous and feared the worst that not only had the cancer spread to her lymph nodes but to other parts of her body.
She kissed Joe when they called her name and walked back. She was wearing loose clothing, and she lay there as the scan ran. She walked back out to Joe. He stood up and hugged her.
They went to lunch at R+D Kitchen for lunch. They sat there and ate in silence. Joe had noticed her appetite had gone down. She had barely eaten over the last week. He leaned in and kissed her sexually.
"You gotta try this; it's so good, plus it's so sexy when I feed you." He cut a piece of his omelet and held the fork to her mouth.
She took a bite off his fork, "oh baby, that is so sexy." She smiled as she chewed the bite.
"That is really good. Do you want a bite of my salad?"
"Sure, it looks very tasty." She got a bite on the fork and held it to his mouth. He locked eyes with her as he took the bite and smiled his sexy smirk at her.
"Baby, you keep looking at me like that, and we may not make it to my appointment. It's been too long since we have made love."
"How about this, when we leave your appointment? I will rent us a room, and we can make love and just forget everything we are dealing with for a few hours. We can just get lost in each other before we return to reality."
