Riley POV
To say I was nervous walking along the immaculate sidewalks of Seattle headed straight to a twenty two story building, where my new job would be, was an understatement. I wore my black power suit, red cami paired with my red silhouettes for an extra confidence boost but I don't think it was helping much.
Not only was everything all new; from the town, to the people, to my job, but I had this stupid anxiety knocking in my chest.
This morning I second guessed even wearing a skirt to work because of all the bullshit with Darell. I brushed it off and wore the suit anyways, but in the back of my mind I thought maybe I was over doing it.
I shouldn't feel uncomfortable and never had before. Even Becky's voice saying "you always wear those tight outfits..." rang through my head.
My clothes weren't tight, my skirt wasn't short, and my cami didn't show any cleavage. What I wore was appropriate, but also fabulous.
I pitched my head up a little higher and walked through the front doors. I was not letting anyone change me.
The front entrance opened endlessly to high ceilings, shiny metal frames, and beige columns about thirty feet from the door. I had no idea where to go. In my old office there was a small lobby then security to go through. There wasn't a person in sight and definitely no security or metal detectors.
"Lost!" A deep voice came from behind me making me jump. I almost broke my ankle in the process.
"Fuck Brandon! Why would you do that?" I scolded him, but he was too busy laughing at me to notice.
"You are so clumsy." He wiped a tear from his eye.
I rolled my eyes and walked straight ahead. This wasn't helping my nervous. I came to a large white stone desk with big black letters printed "Brookstone Inc."
"Excuse me! Can you tell me where to meet Mr. Brookstone?" I asked the man tapping away at his computer. He seemed annoyed I was bothering him, which made no sense. Wasn't he the secretary or something sitting at the front desk to the front entrance.
"Sorry lady, you can't just see Jax whenever you want. You need an appointment. Do you have an appointment?" His tone was all snotty.
"No, but..."
"Well, that is your answer. No, the exit is that way."
"Excuse me Sir I work here. I won't leave and I don't think our boss would appreciate this tone of yours." This was the first rude person I met here. I knew it was all too good to be true.
"Need help?" Brandon whispered with his back agaisnt the desk.
I just glared at him. Why was he even here? I took a deep breath.
"Let's try this again. My name is Riley Parker. Today is my first day reporting to work. I'm the new executive director of Brookstone's marketing division. Can you call Jax, or his secretary, and asked where I'm supposed to report to?" I can't believe I didn't even think of needing this information before right now.
"Ma'am if you were a new employee I would have a memo about your arrival and you would have a clue on where to go. Besides, we don't hire your kind here."
"My kind! What the fuck is that supposed to mean?" This little snot nose kid had my blood boiling now. I couldn't hit him despite my fingers curling in a fist though.
"Do you find this amusing, Brandon?" Another deep voice spoke out from behind me, making me spin around. I didn't realize who it was but I was ready to fight.
"No sir. I offered to help, but Ms. Parker said she had it under control. I'm sorry." Brandon bowed his head like a peasant would to a king. I scuffed at the two of them.
