Liam POV

Maverick was running wild in my soul the second he smelled himself growing inside Riley. I could feel him mocking me that he was right and we did fill her with our pup that night. I still couldn't grasp how this was possible though.

Jax's wolf was in full control the second he caught my scent on her. He would protect her, even from me, but I couldn't allow that. Maverick would never allow him to take my child. There was a possibility my son would be human, or worse a hybrid, but I didn't care. He was mine.

I left the office heading straight to an old witch my mother hired when Maverick first emerged. His spirit was a rambunctious little wolf that cared little for empathy of others. He demanded respect from anyone that crossed our path.

The first night I shifted a visiting pack was staying with us. My father often invited other Alphas and higher ranking families to stay while negotiating contracts. There were many packs around the world that usually lived peacefully, but separately from one another. Occasionally, an Alpha would rise to power that showed more brutality than diplomacy though. They would evade neighboring territories to expand their own or for a resource they desired.

The Alpha visiting was negotiating strict territory laws to be enforced when one crossed into another's. He was a nice enough guy, but his son, their future Alpha, was a prick and a bully.

The days leading up to my transformation he pushed me around and called me a weak Alpha. He purposely challenged me to do things he knew he would beat me at. I was almost twelve years old and hadn't shifted. He was sixteen and already connected with his spirit wolf.

My mother constantly told me to ignore him or that he was just showing off, but it ate away at me. My father was Alpha to one of the strongest packs. He trained me five days a weak to be a strong Alpha. I didn't like constantly losing or it being rubbed in my face.

That night everything changed in my life.

This witch, Star, my mother hired was able to suppress Maverick's spirit slightly. It took a toll on her body and did very little against my spirit, but it was enough for me to learn better control. Maverick never killed with no reason, but he wouldn't bat an eye to rip out your throat for simply questioning my order. The years of suppression the witch did to me caused a fracture between our link. Others were more connected to their wolves then I was. It was great when I was in control but deadly when he took over.

"My little Liam. How is my Alpha doing?" Star gave me a bear hug despite her small frame.

My arms remained at my side, looking around the apothecary store she held just outside our pack. There was everything from sage sticks to ward off ghost, which didn't exist, to actual toad eyes lined across her shelves. Large tapestry of the constellation hung on some walls while others were lined ceiling to floor with books. Star had everything a human mind conjured as magic, to everything that was actually magical in her shop.

"Not so little anymore. I need your help." I grunted, trying to pry her arms off me. She huffed strands of black hair from her lightly wrinkled face giving me her very disapproving grey eyes.

"Sorry Star. It's good to see you. I've been fine." I gave her a hug back this time and she laughed, amused that she could still make the big bad Alpha say sorry.

"That's better my little wolf pup. Now sit and I'll make some tea. Tell me what is worrying such a handsome young boy."

I was only 22, but I felt like I lived a hundred years. I guess to a witch that was alive during the renaissance I was just a young pup though.

"One of my pack members got a human pregnant. I need to know everything about what this means and what to do."

She laughed at me as she set the kettle on her single burn. "Oh little pup, that is impossible. Someone is pulling your chain." She teased, but Maverick didn't like it.
