Liam POV
We tracked through mud and dense forest letting a small lightning bug lead the way. The second I saw the blue glow flying around I knew it was Star sending us help.
Jax moved painfully but didn't stop. Riley walked beside him trying to help support his body weight. Fear was consuming me. Jax wasn't hit with a killing blow, but he was cursed. I knew I had a large hole slowly healing on my back too, but a wound was all it was. I felt no magic left behind in it.
Mildred hit me first and saw it didn't kill me. I'm guessing she decided to try a curse instead. A magical curse probably wouldn't of effected me either, but Jax wasn't gifted with a natural repellent to magic like I was.
"You made it!" Star let out a long breath like she had been holding it since we left. Her arms came around my neck and for the first time since knowing her I just hugged her back. It was hard finding any resentment or anger when everything was falling apart. We were fighting a battle we wouldn't win.
"Barely, but we did. Jax was hit with some curse. He needs to be patched up." I moved out of her arms and moved to Jax, helping him inside the little shack in the woods.
He sat on the small blue couch and I slowly removed his shirt. I wanted to run my hands over his smooth skin, but I knew that was inappropriate.
"This isn't good." Star sighed sitting next to him. Her fingers glided over his wound as she examined what magic was left inside him. "This was Mildred. She was always a quick thinker with a cruel mind."
"Will he be ok?" Riley sat at his other side watching Star.
"Probably. This is a curse of loyalty. A dark and vicious magic that shouldn't be used. If Jax betrays Mildred then he will be immobilized."
"What does that mean exactly?" I asked confused.
"The magic is moving through his body, stretching into his veins to reach his heart and mind. Within days he will be completely loyal to Mildred, and only Mildred. If he tries to harm her or defies her order his body will give out until his master allows him to wake."
"She turned me into her fucking slave?" Jax said with disgust.
"Basically, yes." Star looked sadly at him. "I can slow down the curse, buy you a week or two before you become completely devoted to her. It needs to be undone as soon as possible though. Only the blood of Mildred can undo it."
"Aren't you cousins? Can your blood undo the spell?" Riley asked. It wasn't a bad idea, but it wasn't the way magic worked.
"No, it has to be hers or her direct kin." I said pacing the floor in front of them. Our timeline just got shorter. I wasn't watching Jax become Mildred's zombie slave or Riley fall apart from losing him.
"Then we need to go back. We need Mildred's blood and to save my father!" Riley demanded.
"Baby, we can't go back there. We won't make it out and our daughter is still out there somewhere." Jax squeezed her hand.
"How can I chose to only save one of you? I want all of you safe." Riley was breaking and we all saw it.
"We will always chose our daughter first." I said without question.
I wanted to help Jax too, but my skin was itching to hold my daughter. I didn't even know what she looked like. How big is she? Does she have my eyes or Riley's? We needed to find her first.
"I know. She is safe, or at least Freya told me so. They took my blood to perform a tracing spell. There are many in the Dark horse coven that aren't loyal to Demetrius." She rubbed two scars on her wrist as she spoke. They did more than take her blood.
