Jax POV
We arrived at the cottage just as dusk approached and began unpacking. Riley and Sophia started to make a late dinner from what little food we picked up on the way. Star was going to bring us more supplies and Jeremiah made Riley promise we wouldn't leave the house grounds.
Both Star and Freya were part of the Dark Horse coven, like Mildred was too. They were all of the same power, but each had a dark and powerful magic inside them. Freya and Mildred were actually cousins and grew up at the coven's main house. It was a black Victorian home, set deep in the woods. It sounded like a creepy place to raise kids, but they learned much of their art there.
Star's dad left the coven, cursed for his betrayal, but he took the punishment to be with the woman he loved. A woman that was a werewolf. Star wasn't a hybrid though; she was born a full witch taking only her father's magic. He died when she was young as his magic consumed him for not bending a knee to the Lycans. It was a curse Demetrius' and Jeremiah's father placed on their blood line.
Star was raised outside the coven, but twice a month she went there to pay her penance and avoid being cursed herself. She said Demetrius would show up from time to time to pick through the new generations that came of age. He took any that showed true potential. Freya was the last Black Horse witch that interested him though. They purposely diluted their bloodline to avoid their daughters from being taken at twelve years old to be a pet to their master.
The last few days we learned a lot from Star and Freya. I always thought Demetrius only terrorized our kind, but I was wrong. He had an unhealthy obsession with fairies too. They rarely reproduced children, but they seem to get him the most excited. The way he walked this earth like a God among all species had me more nervous.
Jeremiah seemed confident he could take his brother, but I was worried it wasn't enough. He was almost as big as him now too. I was a Beta with Alpha rights. I knew it took more than strength to beat someone like Demetrius. He had many bonded to him as well. Many who followed his immense power and would protect him.
What if Jeremiah failed? Riley would lose her father and we would be doomed to be under his thumb. I ate silently, listening to the woman chat about their lives. Brandon and Barry keep eyeing each other up and I kicked myself for not seeing it earlier. I was happy for them, but all in all, I just wasn't happy myself.
I kept checking the time, trying to prolong the inevitable. I just need more time, but time was slipping away.
"Hey, handsome." Riley's hand came into mine. The table was clear of dinner and I just sat there. I hadn't realized everyone finished or that I sat alone. "You don't have to do this."
"I do, not just for you and our child. I need to do this for me. I need to let go of him."
"We are protected in this house. He can't find us."
"I need to let him go." I looked to her and she saw how truly broken I was inside. Her eyes teared as she slowly shook her head.
"I know, Jax. I hate seeing you in pain though."
"Come with me." I stood and held out my hand. At first I decided I would do this on my own, but seeing her now, I knew I had to do this with her. We were one. I can't hide my love or my pain from her, and I didn't want to.
Jeremiah, Freya, and Star had already left for the night, Claire was tucked in hours ago, Katie was asleep on the couch and the others drank wine and talked in the living room.
"She is a light weight." Sophia giggled at her sister. She grabbed lipstick from her bag and drew an obscene drawing on her little sister's face.
"What are you five?" Brandon said lifting Katie in his arm. "I'll put her to bed. You both need to get sleep soon too." He looked to his other two sisters.
