She was right within the scramble when it had happened. She wanted to go somewhere, a moment out of the house. And she had suddenly heard it echo from up there when wanting to cross the streets.
“ H… How could I… possibly apologize to— to everyone for… for what I have done! Aaaah…! ”
It even made her look up after having tried to ignore the news, only seeing the old geezer Madarame crying while slamming his fists on that table, then bowing and almost slamming that head onto his table. Honestly, she could already imagine what this was and hearing it was not surprising. She had her suspicions but it was just that – Suspicions, no solid evidence. And it had not been her business anyways so she was not going to look into this.
And it would have been just that usually and yet another part had gotten her attention, at least for a short moment. Though it sounded too good to be true.
“ Also, a group calling themselves the Phantom Thieves posted a dubious note at Madarame’s exhibit. ”
And then she overheard a female pedestrian saying: “ Ohh, I’ve heard of them before. They supposedly steal evil hearts; it’s why the culprits apologize. ”
Hearing that only made her roll her eyes. This was absurd to her ears. Phantom Thieves? Stealing evil hearts? This is why Madarame apologized? Not just that but last month a school teacher and former Olympian athlete also confessed to some of the worst things imaginable – Abusing students and sexually harassing female students. And the Phantom Thieves had a hand in it as well. But honestly, it was absurd. There’s no way that it was that simple.
Looking at it from a more realistic angle it went probably like this: Someone dug up dirt on them and before they could rat any of the two out they confessed instead. At least that was the only logical conclusion. Besides, if it was that easy then the one pinning their crimes on her father would–
“Phantom Thieves, huh…?” She heard a familiar voice echo from nearby. It made her lose the trail of thought she had, looking around a few times yet spotting no one. But she had a clue, there was no way she was imagining that! Right?
A bit more looking around and she spotted that familiar face in question, who most would describe as a ‘pleasant boy’. If he was or not is the decision of the individual. That didn’t change the fact that she knew him and she noticed a small grin on her face. He was just walking there, not suspecting a thing. Perfect to sneak up and quickly run over to him from behind. Then give him a light shove and greet him loudly: “Akemi–Kun~!”
The light shove had pushed him forward and she could hear the gasp from his mouth. Once he had caught his balance again however he turned around, only letting out a sigh. “For the last time, it’s not Akemi.”
“Eh? Really? My bad, I forgot~”
And with that the Phantom Thieves were forgotten in her mind. At least for now.
