"So we have all gathered you guys here today..." Lily grinned at Sirius, Remus, Peter, Mary and I who were all sat in the garden on a blanket. It was the first sunny day of the year so we had invited everyone round for a bbq to announce the big news. James and Lily had gone off to a nice village in the countryside for a weekend and James proposed over a home cooked meal that he made for her. (After setting off the smoke alarm twice according to Lily.)
Ever since James had become an animagus, he had enjoyed spending more time in the woods, and Lily enjoyed taking pictures of nature and things like that."Tag you're it." I whispered to Pete as I passed my sleeping daughter to him. She was still only small and had her fathers temperament thank Merlin so she slept soundly but still, she made my arms ache. I didn't like to let her out of my sight often.
He smiled and gently held Lucilla in his arms, rocking her softly as he carefully cupped her little head in his hand. Peter was surprisingly good with children it seemed, he had a soft nature about him that lulled her back to sleep with ease as she stirred. He would be an excellent father one day.
"You tossers were wrong! Lilyflower has agreed to marry me!" James smiled the brightest and happiest smile I've ever seen everyone roared with a cheer.
Sirius beamed with pride, looking like he might burst as his mouth cracked into a wide grin. "Yes Potter!" He tackled James in a hug and the two jumped up and down.
We all gushed over them in congratulations and Lily and I squealed that we would be real sisters.
Once everyone had settled down, we sat in the grass happily chatting away. My heart glowed with the feeling of having almost all my friends together again. Every time we saw each other, there was the sting of knowing something was missing. It was a deep hole that everyone seemed good enough at ignoring but sometimes, I felt that the hole of Marlene's absence might swallow me up.
"So when's the wedding then?" Remus smiled as he fiddled with blades of grass. His straw coloured hair had grown rather long and now, he had a trimmed beard forming.
There was a silence that fell softly across the group like a stuffy blanket. James awkwardly looked at the engagement ring on my finger and I realised why he was so quiet.
My ever thoughtful brother, as always, putting me first. I smiled and shook my head, giving him the okay as I ignored how I longed to walk down the aisle.
Mary had seemingly picked up on our silent conversation as she swooped in and saved the awkwardness. "Everyone knows Lily's always dreamed of a June wedding." She smiled and Lily laughed.
"It's true."
"June it is then." James beamed, looking only at his bride to be as his cheeks flushed a light pink.
"That's not much time to prepare the best speech you've ever seen!" Sirius huffed dramatically and flopped back in the grass, his head finding its way onto Remus's lap. "I would have had it since first year... if I thought this day would ever come!" He grinned over at James.
"You'll figure it out." Peter chuckled. "In any case, I'm sure y/n and Mary will get to work right away as wedding planners."
"That we will wormy." I smiled and Mary gave me a high five. "We'll have the most beautiful decor, so many flowers that you won't even notice the smell of wet dog coming from the flower girl."
"Hey!" Sirius reached over and punched me in the arm.
"Ow." I frowned and smacked him on the head.
"Stop it! There's children around." Remus nodded over to Lucilla who was still in Peters arms happily.
