The day came for Marlene's sleepover and I was giddy with excitement as I packed a duffel bag. I could not wait to have a nice girls night after so long. I tied my hair up into a ponytail and packed some comfy pyjamas, a toothbrush, a change of clothes and a bottle of wine (or two.)

Walking downstairs with my bag, I gave my mum a quick hug goodbye. "I'm off." I smiled. She was in the living room knitting a big red jumper with what looked like a half formed J on the front. No doubt a Christmas gift for James.

"Have fun darling." She smiled and gave me a kiss on the cheek. "Do send the McKinnons my love won't you?"

"I will." I smiled and slipped on a pair of Doc Martens by the front door. "I'll see you soon."
The autumn leaves crunched under my feet as I walked past the pumpkins in our front garden. With a wave of my wand, I found myself up in Scotland. The crisp chill in the air reminded me of the Hogwarts grounds, how I would miss the Halloween Feast that would be being held soon. I had been to Marlene's house a few times, I recognised the cobbled path that lead up to it, not far now. "Y/n!" My head whipped around to the familiar voice of Mary.

"Aaah Mary!" I squealed in excitement and we both ran up to each other, I squeezed her in a big hug. Despite the cold, she never failed to look stylish in her Afghan coat and big hoop earrings.

"I've missed you so much." She smiled and gave me a tight squeeze.

"I've missed you!" We began to walk down the path arm in arm.

"Well, I've got a muggle job as a secretary. It's not much but it pays the bills." She shrugged. "I expect I'll be moving out soon. I get to wear a cute pencil skirt and a cute little blazer, it's strange after all those years surrounded by magic."

"That's wonderful Mary, well done!" I squeezed her hand proudly. Growing up meant realising that we all had different dreams, even though we might not understand we can still be proud of each other. "I brought some wine for you guys, not that I can have any." I chuckled.

"Y/n Potter turning down a glass of wine? Jesus what happened!?" Mary laughed and my eyes widened realising I hadn't yet told her.

"Oh my god you don't know do you?" I gasped. "I was going to tell you in person but you never came by!"

Mary's brow furrowed in concern. "Tell me what?"

"I'm pregnant!"

"Shit!" She gasped and her hand slapped over her mouth. "Wow that's- oh my god y/n! You guys really couldn't wrap it up?" She teased. "Especially with everything going on..."

"Shush." I chuckled and nudged her. "We're not talking about everything going on tonight."

"Good idea." She nodded. "How did Reg react?"

"He went white as a sheet. Smoked about a thousand cigarettes and then promised to be a good dad or whatever." I shrugged.

"He's white as a sheet already." Mary laughed. I could see the house on the hill as we approached. "Mr McKinnon must be doing some gardening. The front door is wide open."  Marlene's dad fancied himself to have green thumbs, he was always sending us carrots that he'd grown in his garden.

The house was unusually silent as we reached the front door. "Marls!" I called, knocking on the front door. No reply. "That's odd."

"I'll go look upstairs for her." Mary frowned in confusion and took off up the wooden stairs. There was a strange smell that hung in the air as I walked through the kitchen. Plates and cutlery lay in the sink waiting to be washed up, the chairs at the table were askew from people getting up after eating. Even though the house didn't sound lived in, it still was clear that the McKinnons were here. "Marlene? Mr McKinnon?" I called again to be met with silence. The only sound to be heard was the ticking on the clock on the wall.
